is cisco knowledge necessary to use a cisco catalyst 2950 switch????....i know nothing about cisco configurations but need the gigabit capabilities as well as the reliability cisco is known for.....options?....alternatives?....retorts??.....thnx

Well, plenty of other switches have Gigabit ports. But no matter what, you're going to need to learn about switch management for whatever brand you choose.

You can probably get the switch up and running without significant Cisco knowledge, but it won't be a good configuration at all. 🙂

cisco.com has a lot , and I mean a lot of cfg guides 4 their switches / routers . You can always google around , or ask my man spidey for some help.Cisco also has their own forum / bbs , and response is pretty much guaranteed.

ON 2950, THE CONFIG IS REALLY EASY!

Assume you bought it new, most of the switch are already config to work:

However, if you want to mix around with Gigabyte port, you may need to read up
on EtherChannel bundling etc...

The biggest difference between knowing and not knowing is that you can probably
Get Gigabyte Port to work without much knowledge.
But your switch probably won't be secure, since configuring Access-List is a bitch

Still I would look at Dell Switch if I don't have a cisco background
