cisco routers

I have 2 cisco routers (2501 and 1601). How much would it cost to upgrade the IOS on them. The 2501 has version 11.0, and the 1601 has some weird experimental IOS version that is 11.something. If it is much to upgrade I wont bother, I am just using them for my own educational use, so all the new features really wont do much, just let me play around with them.

Thanks

To the best of my knowledge Cisco does not charge for IOS, they make their money selling hardware. Check out their website, I'm sure you'll find all the answers there. Good luck!

Well, I'm not sure if its legal, but you can pick up an IOS upgrade package on Ebay pretty cheap. Just don't get burned like I did. Wound up being some yahoo slapping it on a CD-R and charging $100.

Cisco will sell you new ios's. I'm sure you can find out about it on cisco.com. And no, picking up ios's on ebay is illegal...but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Keep in mind you may not even have enough flash in those routers to run 12.x.x ios.

To expand on that - IOS upgrades are most definitely *NOT* free. You have to pay for a yearly maintenance on a router in order to be able to download them off the website.

Cisco has a marketplace off their web page where you can buy various parts and software, that's the "legal" way to do it. You might be able to find it cheaper from someplace like warehouse.com.

As also mentioned, check the requirements for RAM and Flash on your 2500 - Most of those are pretty weak and won't handle a modern IOS.

Actually, Cisco makes HUGE amounts of money off the service contracts, especially since the margins are SO much higher. And if you have any interest in uptime for your network at all (we're talkin about work now, not study or home), then you pay like a green grocer to Tony Soprano...😀

I just got some updates from my CCNA instructor. Should take both my routers up to 12.0. Is this legal? If not, well, then I dont have them do I. 😉
