from talking with the Cisico instructor at my HS, they say that there are lots of CCNA'd people that you are completing with and there won't be too many prime jobs left. You may want to try for another type of certification program from MS, or Oracle.

I'm also in the Cisco Networking Academy.
If I get a CCNP, will that make much difference regarding a job?

A CCNA is simply a way of showing an employer that you're motivated and have some basic understanding of networking. It is a small step up, but certainly not as good as a few years job experience. Not that you shouldn't take it, but don't count on it alone landing you a high-paying job.

A CCNP is a much more respected certification. If you can pass the CCNP, you've got a very good handle on Cisco routers and networking in general - It's a very tough series of exams. But, as always, job experience is key.

You might head over to the networking forum - There's a lot of people there who can answer this kind of question. I just happened to be bored and sifting through OT tonight and happened to catch it. You'll get a better response there.

So, if someone has taken the first 4 Cisco semesters, what kind of starting salary can he/she expect? I'm starting S3 soon, and then S4.

Jeff, classes are great, but experience is what really counts. If you've taken the tests to match all of your classes and have some high-tech experience, you're in fairly decent shape. Salaries really vary across the country, so it would be hard to say exactly how much you'd make - Depends what kind of job you find, too.

Part of the Cisco semester for LCCC (guess for the entire certification thing) is the internship. Don't know when I'm going to get mine in; I completely forgot about it until someone mentioned it to me - a week or two after the deadline for registering for it.

It's the other way around for me; in order to GET online at college, I have to go through the school's network. Some background: ST11 is the room. ST11 holds some of the most resource intensive computer classes there: Win2k server, NT migration, etc. We have some of the oldest systems in the building. P2 400's with 256MB RAM (took 2 years of asking to upgrade from 128MB). And the hubs that connect us to the network - are old 10Mbps hubs; yes, hubs.
The network there stalls on average, once a minute. All Internet throughput will just stop dead for about 10 seconds, which really sucks if you're doing an online test.
They are getting new hubs. $2500 for a 24-port hub. Went to pricewatch, and found one for $1000.
Ok, rant mode disabled.

But yes, the online course is handy to use and review from anywhere.

Certifications are hardly worth the paper they're printed on since they are so mainstream. Try to imagine the tons of resumes these hiring managers get. Most of them all read the same way. What gets you hired is having something on your resume that nobody else does, and that certain something needs to relate to the position you are applying for. That is how I was selected for the jobs I have had. Unfortunately, I'm dead in the water right now...the job market really blows.
