Cisco 805?

Is this the most inexpensive V.35->Ethernet Router solution?

Probably going to be just about as cheap as you can get. I saw them for about $650 on pricewatch. Chances are your CSU/DSU is going to be a lot more expensive. (And don't forget the cable - CAB-V35-MT, as I recall). Saw a "compatible with..." cable on pricewatch for $40, too. Didn't recognize either of the two vendors, however, so you'd be taking your chances.

What is the serial interface going into?

Well, the csu/dsu is provided by the isp. I happen to have an office in the building, and they are willing to sell 128k monthly, but I have to provide the router and v.35 cable. All I have been told is that V.35 is the cable I am to provide to connect csu/dsu to router, and ethernet between my router in their office and my server in my office.

I thought maybe there was a cyrix brand in the field, if Cisco is the Intel. $700 initial outlay seems prohibitive and foolish.

How come there is not a V.35 serial port on a pci card or something?

They make those. Aren't cheap from what I recall though.

Believe me, for a real router and cable $700 is dirt cheap. The average price of a corporate router is probably about $15,000.. Most companies spend about $3,000 for their Internet router.

Just read the part about the PCI v.35 card and did a quick search.. Found one for $149! Check here for details. Don't know the vendor, however. This card has been discontinued from IBM, but might do the trick. Not sure about driver availability, however. Here's the link at IBM.

Thanks Garion, that price is so much less than any other I found, it makes me wonder...
I just don't know enough about all this.
I do know that maintaining a PC in their office using this card would not be quite as convenient as using an actual router, so...

Anybody know for sure that a Cisco 1005 would not work just as well as the 805 for this purpose?

It would do fine - Better, actually, since it's got more horsepower.

I just noticed something - I gave you some bad info. The 805 uses a SmartSerial connector on the back and the 1005 uses a normal high-density serial cable. The SmartSerial cable you need for an 805 would be a CAB-SS-530MT and the CAB-V35-MT would be for the high-density port on the 1005.

Note - those cables assume you have a Winchester connector on your CSU/DSU. They are easy to recognize - Looks like something out of the space program. It's a huge socket on the CSU with 4-5 rows of pins and two sockets for screws. It's about 50% wider and about 400% taller than your typical DB25 serial connector.

Cisco isn't the intel of Routing and switching. They can be expensive, but they still are the best. Some of their switches are better competitions routers.
