Cisco 3600 and 2600 series routers -> Easiest tutorial

bob4432

i acquired a 3600 and 2600 series router at a estate sale and wanted to mess around with them. i was wondering if they could be used as a cable/dsl router? also, since i have no idea how what these things can do, is there a place other than cisco to read about them, somewhere that is written for people that know nothing about their products and are not really familiar with router setups and have a limited knowledge of networking altogether?

thanks in advance 🙂

Most Cisco routers are VERY different than your classic broadband "router". Ciscos are meant for routing traffic between LAN segments and across wide area networks. These kinds of situations are far, far more complex than your typical home Internet connection.

There are DSL cards for these kinds of routers - The 3600 would require a network module, then a DSL WIC, the 2600 just needs a DSL WIC. In truth, there's no reason to use them in this capacity, however. Most little Linksys/Netgear/etc. routers proabably do a better job at what they are designed for than the Ciscos would, not to mention the incredible complexity of trying to set it all up and manage it.

So, it's an interesting purchase and something fun to play with - I'd start on Cisco's site and look for some kind of Getting Started guide and go from there.

there are a couple of cards in the 3600 series one already, they are labeled as follows:

WIC 1DSU T1 (T1 DSU/CSU)
WIC 1B U (ISDN BRI U)
Serial 4A/S (Serial 0 - 3)

there is also a ethernet 0 and 1 along with another port that is labeled AUI. i understand what you are saying but just thought it would be interesting.

i will look on cisco website.

thanks 🙂

what would i need to get these to work at my home with a cable modem? anybody know what wic to go from cable modem to these?

why not use one of the AUI ports with a transiever adapter to ethernet?

You would need a Static IP from your cable/dsl provider to do that though.....

hmmm... my 2 cents. use these to learn a bit more about cisco routers and networking.

if you don't have the desire to do that, sell them. you could make a nice sum on both units.

while you could use these to do what you wanted... and i'm one that tried with my 2611, i realized that it was really an overkill for what was needed, so I dropped it back into my router pod.

but to answer your question, you will need to run NAT and one ethernet port will connect to your cable modem while the other will connect to your LAN.

i dunno if i have my config on me. if i do, i'll post it. although, i very much doubt it'll make any sense to you if you don't know much about Cisco's IOS.

i understand that they are total overkill bit i want to learn with them and i got them really cheap, i wouldn't get this deal again in a thousand years. so on the 3600 series, there is a eth0 and eth1. that is what i need? no other cards to buy?

thanks in advance for your time. if you could post the config i would appreciate it, i don't have experience but i do have time 🙂

With your 3600 you would connect one ethernet interface to the cable modem and the other to a switch for your internal network. You will have to setup NAT on the router and the interface connected to your cable modem would be the outside interface and the inside interface would be the one connected to you internal switch. You should be able to have it work with DHCP on the outside interface but I am not sure how it would work if you need to register your mac accress with the cable company. There is no provision to clone mac-addresses with the router. I would look on Cisco's site under the 3600 series of routers to find out how to setup NAT.

Edit: Here is a link that shows most of the NAT setup. You may need to modify it somewhat to fit your needs.

to learn with it, should i put it behind my current cable router, then it could have a static ip like 192.168.1.x? i have extra switches so i could create a lan just for the testing/learning with it.

also, when i start it up i can see in hyperterminal all the text as it loads/starts, but when it gets to this line:

it just tries it over and over. i have had it on for over 20minutes and never get to a setup prompt. any ideas?

clear the config and start from scratch, you can find the procedures on cisco.com.

its much the same as "password recovery"

from the cisco website:

"Note The Reset to Factory Defaults feature is not supported on Cisco 3620, 3640, 3640A, and 7000 series routers."

what to do now?

is there any way to stop this loop?

for over 45 minutes. 🙁

You need to clear the configuration file.

You can do this with password recovery where you boot into rommon, change config register to not load config file, then you can erase the config...

you'll boot with a clean config and can then change the config register back.

or quite simply just enter "shutdown" on the interface bri0/0.

As others said, the only effective way to use such a router and learn at the same time is to use it internally. Even then, the benefits fall short of taking a cisco class.

Hell, before the class I wanted to buy one. After passing the CCNA curriculum(4 classes/2 semesters/8hrs/wk) I no logner want one.

how can i clear it if i can't type anything in hyperterminal? this message just gets written over and over, and if i hit enter, nothing. also, when it very first boots up, there is a line where it says to hit enter to continue, but i hit enter and nothing happens, then it goes through this config.?

power cycle router with terminal attached to the console

hit <ctrl><break> to enter ROMMON mode.

type - confreg 0x2142
type - reset

the router will now ignore the configuration file and be "clean", no passwords, no nothing.

type - enable
type - write erase

the write erase will delete the configuration file.

and to change the configuration register back...
type - config t
type - config-register 0x2102
type - end

you're all set. I'd highly recommend you pick up a book to learn the basics.

thanks for the info, i will definately look into those books. are they just titled ccna or are there different versions? if different versions, which ones?

thanks again in advance 🙂

set your terminal to 9600 8N1 and make sure you're using an 8 pin rollover cable (its flat and has pins 1-8 reversed)

Well it sounds like your serial adapter/cable aren't correct.

you can get a console cable off ebay for a buck or two

umm..I don't think he'll understand that spidey😛

Plug in a rollover cable using a rj45 to serial adapter or has one built in. In hyperterminal, make a new conenction using the serial port, and set the options to:

9600bit rate non-parity etc....

when the system loads up, and assuming that these messages are taking place while the system is already booted up, just type "undebug all" and press enter, regardless of whether it appears on the screen.
