Circuit City ripping off gamers?

Text

Apparently there's a circuit city store that has an advertisement saying they will install "backwards compatability" software on your xbox 360 for $29.95. I can't believe a big chain like this would do something like this.

As I know nothing about the Xbox 360 - how is this a scam?

On a side note, that doesn't look like an actual flyer one would find at Circuit City. Looks like something someone made on their home PC. And how can anyone even tell if that picture was taken at a Circuit City?

As long as you have the hard drive, the 360 will download the backwards compatibility updates from your internet connection thru XBOX Live.

Xbox 360s come with backwards compatability be default, IIRC.

I'm guessing they're doing the latest backwards compatibility patch...though anyone with broadband can do that. You don't even need Live.

According to xbox.com you have to have your Xbox 360 updated in order to play Xbox games. This can be done either using Xbox Live (needs internet. subscription??), download and burn it (needs internet AND a burner), or order the update disc ($1.99 shipping). Obviously cheapest way if you don't have internet is to order the update disc by using someone elses computer or going to a public library with internet access.
So, CC is charging $30 to do it for you? Ok, so? If anyone is stupid enough to do that it's their own damn fault. CC isn't forcing anyone to do it. "Buyer beware"

And does that backwards compatibilitiy come with features listed in the bullet points on the ad?

Not really any different from charging the same amount to install software on a computer I guess.

There's one born every day...

the real scam is this: the xbox can't render older games at 720p and 1080i as the poster says. it can stretch the signal to fit, but it will look bad. not as the poster says.

Technically, what they're doing isn't illegal or fraud. They're charging you for the service of updating the software, not for the software itself. Perhaps someone buying a 360 doesn't have broadband, but wants to play their old XBOX games too. Sure, they could order the update software, maybe they can't figure it out. CC figures they can do it for the customer, for a fee of course.

So yeah, it's totally wrong (morally) and they're being really sneaky about it, but people need to research stuff more before simply plunking down cash for such things. If it's such a problem, call CC corporate and complain, they may not allow stores to offer such services without corporate permission.

How is this any different than say 'Geek Squad' charging to update your PC?

Yes, both are rip offs
It isn't a rip off if you don't know how to do it. If someone pays a shop to change their car's oil but I change mine in 20 minutes, is that a rip off? No, it is someone paying someone else to do something they know how to do. Goddamn dumbasses

I offer a service on Craigslist where I charge to come over and turn on your lights for you, $5 per switch. On and Off again included:roll:

Exactly. And while updating some computer software might not be quite as labor-intensive as changing oil or switching out a flat tire, there are plenty of people who neither know, nor care to know, how to do any of the above. As such, they're willing to pay to have someone else do it for them. Nothing at all wrong with that.

Whoa whoa, lets check that hostility, mmkay? Nothing to get worked up about, but in my book, $60/hour for doing a Windows Update is a capital Rip Off.

i used to like CC because they have good prices and lots of stock. now most of the people working in it are slow, lazy, rude SOB's (around NYC). it took me 50 minutes last time to do a pickup and a PM to staples.
