Cipher Strength Appears as 0-Bit in Internet Explorer (Q261328)

I can't get onto a lot of web sites because of the problem in the title. This is Microsofts answer below. That seems a little more than I am up for! Anybody have a solution that might be a tad easier? Thanks!

SYMPTOMS
When you click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu, the cipher strength entry may be "0 Bit" and you may be unable to connect to secure Web sites.



CAUSE
This issue can occur if the Schannel.dll, Rsabase.dll, or Rsaenh.dll files are absent, damaged, or the wrong version.



RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Start the computer in Safe mode.


Click Start , click Run , and then type msconfig .


Extract the following files from the Windows Me cab files located at Windir \Options\Install (or the location of a Windows Me flat) into the windir \system folder:


Rsabase.dll
Rsaenh.dll
Schannel.dll
Verify the version of Windir \System\Advapi32.dll, and if the file is not at least 4.90.0.3000, extract a new copy from Windir \Options\Install into the windir \system folder.


Re-register each of these three .dll files. To do so, click Start , click Run , and then type the following commands (where windir is the name of your Windows folder):


regsvr32 windir \system\schannel.dll
regsvr32 windir \system\rsabase.dll
regsvr32 windir \system\rsaenh.dll
Restart the computer in Normal mode. Internet Explorer should now display 128-bit cipher strength.

ugh thats not very much .. restoring the files in msconfig will take less than a second, and running the commands .. here do this , open note pad, and copy and paste this into it ..




regsvr32 c:\windows\system\schannel.dll
regsvr32 c:\windows\system\rsabase.dll
regsvr32 c:\windows\system\rsaenh.dll



name it "fix.bat" and hit start,run, command and run the batch file .. will take you all of 2 minutes. 3 if your a slow typer .. good luck ..

Thanks for the suggestion. It is actually my girlfriends computer whom is 600 miles away. So I am trying to help her over the phone.

Is this done from just the start menu? Or after going into MSCONFIG? Sorry to be so ignorant but I probably know just enough to be dangerous! If you could give me just a bit more detail I would be very appreciative. I can actually follow directions very well!

if you enter that stuff into notepad and save it as a .bat (make sure and not as a .bat.txt), then just run the file, double click it, or type its path from the run box, and it will run and execute whatever commands you typed in it.

if youre using NT of any sort you could name it .cmd too.

I am not having any luck getting the file to "run". I had her follow the directions given and she said the file didn't run? Any body know where I might be screwing up?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Never had any luck running the fix from the "notepad". She tried starting the computer in safe mode but didn't have any luck finding the files that she was supposed to be "fixing". We will try the Windows update and see if this fixes it. Those instructions are rather tough for novice users. There should just be some sort of a download patch to fix it! Ackkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!
