Cingular is Suck!

Just wanted to rant about my latest scuffle with Cingular and why they SUCK...

My parents went on a cruise to Alaska earlier this month and made a few phone calls which got posted on the bill as $60 of international roaming from the Caribbean! Called up Cingular and explained that there's no way in hell the calls could have been accidentally picked up from a tower in the Carribean, being thousands of miles away. They said they were very sorry, blah blah etc and would take off half the charges for the misunderstanding. Of course I didn't want to get screwed with paying $30 for their mistake so finally after a lot more arguing they said they'd give me the whole amount back, but as a "one time courtesy credit". Which basically means if the same thing happens again, you're screwed.

I know this for a fact because I DID get screwed before. My family's on a FamilyTalk plan, and there was something wrong w/my sister's phone so she had to get a replacement. They wanted to charge her $15 for a replacement, and after arguing that it wasn't right for them to charge for something that was their fault and under warranty, they said they'd do the one time courtesy crap and reverse the charge. A few months later, the screen on my phone was dying, and I had to send mine in for a replacement under warranty as well. At first the CSR said there would be a $15 charge, but after arguing w/him he said he'll waive it as well. Except a couple of months later, the $15 charge reappeared. When I called customer service they said it was because it was a one time credit (even though it was a different phone) and after arguing and yelling for about an hour, and explaning how my account was imported into the FamilyTalk from an existing ATTWS account, the CSR said she'd reverse the charge..but that the billing dept might decide to put it back on. I don't think the charge ever got permanently removed, so after that, I just gave up.

Anyway, the sad part is that I'll be stuck w/Cingular for quite some time. Mostly because there's a little under a year left on the contract, but also because my rate plan is significantly cheaper than anything else I can find right now. $39.99 for 600 anytime min +$9.99/add'l line. Unlimited USA roaming, M2M, night/weekend, etc. My family switched to ATTWS's family plan from Cingular, which later got eaten up by Cingular--but at least the plan's still the ATT one (no charge for incoming TXT, etc). I switched mine to the GSM Family plan from my ATT TDMA. I wish I still had it, my coverage was great, almost no dropped calls, fast+friendly customer service, no calls where only one party hears, etc.. all of which is lacking in Cingular.

Finally, if anyone read so far..moral of the story is: If you have Cingular, be VERY careful if you travel to Alaska with your phone!!

Hope your Cingular experiences aren't as sucky as mine...

Cingular screwed me so many times and so bad, they couldn't pay me to use their service.

Verizon has been flawless.

Cingular sucks. They have gotten far far worse since they took over AT&T. Around my house the towers suck. I will get full bars and than disconnect and Cingular says it's my phone. They keep wanting to change it.

Cingular added 1.1 million new customers last quarter and had churn of 2.2%.

Verizon Wireless added 1.9 million new customers last quarter and had churn of 1.2%

You can guess which company is doing better.

I signed up for the Cingular Go Plan on the 8th of this month. I am going to dump it. H3ll, I can't even understand what CS is saying the signal is so bad.

5 years with cingular that eventually went downhill. been with tmobile for 6 months and although i lose some coverage in suburban areas, i couldn't be happier with the cs. tmobile's also considerably cheaper than cingular ever since they raised rates after the att merger. for now, the loss of coverage is minor compared to other things so i'm staying put.

I go to school in CA, and live in AK during the summer. I have a Cingular phone based in central California and I have no problems with any of that, although I do admit the customer service is not very helpful, at least for me.

My first job out of college was with a company that provided billing systems for small to medium sized cellular phone providers. Eventually, T-Mobile came in and bought up most of our customers and the company went under. Anyways, I couldn't begin to tell you the billing horror stories. One of the worst being when I was at a client site in Michigan training some of their people and helping them out with their system in general when their billing manager ran a complete billing without even attempting to run a test billing. This was after I had impressed upon him several times the importance of running test billings because once billing is run you can't go back and undo it. Well, there was something wrong with their configuration and every bill on that run had errors in it.

I spent the rest of the trip hearing about how much our system sucked (yes, it's our system's fault you don't run a test billing) and working out ways to get their customers bills adjusted to the correct amount.

no sympathy for you. I just got burned with a $1400 cingular bill for roaming while I was on active duty (US Army) in California. My phone never displayed roam, and i had no idea that i would be charged extra for it. I'm trying to dispute it, but it's looking like a lose-lose situation.

that's one of the most ridiculous cases that i've heard. what is their reasoning that you were supposed to know you were roaming? if all else fails, have the army pay for it!

cingular phones never display roam anymore, they have all been updated..and they used to only display Cingular Extend when you were off their home network, not necessarily where you would be build roaming..if you had a Nation plan you wouldnt have this problem, its your job to know where your home Region is
