i don't get it...how fast does one get addicted. After the first cigarette?

If not then
-smoke one
-its nasty, gross
-smoke another one because you really want that tar and nicotine to taste good

thats retarded

if one does get addicted after just one, then i severely underestimated its effects....

Some people like the taste. When I first puffed on a cigarette, I liked it. Second hand smoke stinks to me, but actually smoking was great. What really gets you hooked is the nicotine buzz. If you actually inhale the smoke, then you will experience a 10 second "buzz". It's a pleasurable experience, so you are likely to try to experience it again. The problem is that your ability to get a buzz goes away and it's replaced with a nicotine addiction. Then you have to smoke just to keep from feeling like crap.

i hate smoking, it does nothing but bad for you.

also hot chicks that smoke = insta-turn off

everything goes yellow, hands, teeth, tongue

since july 1st.... the local has been a much more pleasant place to be, smoke free FTW. smokers can go outside, in the rain.

i dont get it, smoking doesnt make you look cool, or atleast the steps our government has taken makes it look un cool. there are many other ways to relax than having a i love you too so thats not an excuse either. personally i think you have naff all to lose by giving up and everything to gain.

better health, you wont smell, and you needn't spend up to £70 a week on cigs and chewing gum. (this is for those that smoke 40 a day day in day out @ roughly £5 a packet of 20)

lets say you get through 20 cigs every 2 days (bordering on light smoker) thats 3.5 packs of fags a week, about £20 here once all is said and done. now quit that, and suddenly you'll find you have an extra grand to spend at the years end on something more usefull than killing yourself slowly.

to people who smoke to quench their appetite in a bid to control their weight and look physically good, and im not being sexist but it is usually girls...... just why? its daft, any slender lines you gain by not eating much are immediately offset the moment you put that little stick to your mouth. 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

I have my parents to thank for my smoke-free life. I'm sure I'd get hooked on them, if I ever tried.
I think they inadvertently got me really sick riding in the back of the car when I was 4 or 5, and it was one of those early impressions that lasted for life. I hated those fvcking things with a passion!!!
When I got to that age when kids started trying them out, the 10~15 year range, my pals would ask "hey, want to try a cig?" I'd look at them like they were stark raving mad

I used to smoke. I was going through about a pack a day in college for 5 years. I made a promise to myself that I would quit the day I graduated and I did successfully. I was amazed how simple quitting actually was considering the stories I was told.

Why did I do it? That's kind of hard to say other than saying "because I enjoy it". I didn't do it because of stress although it did help. I enjoyed it the most when I was being social and drinking, but I did it sober and alone too which put me out of the social smoker category. For the moment, the best comparison I can give you is choosing between an apple or a bag of fatty greasy chips when I want a snack. The apple is good for me and the chips are not. I don't need the snack. I just want it. I never got nic fits while I was a smoker. I could easily go for over a week without a smoke and not care. I understand that eating is a necessity and smoking is not. I also realize that chips cannot lead to cancer, but the cholesterol could lead to heart issues. Not the best example, but I can't think of something better right now.

do us both a favor and please refrain from responding to my posts. believe me when i say i will NEVER direct a post to you and therefore you don't need to respond.

Do me a favor and stop posting your fucking agenda in every tobacco thread. You lost someone due to tobacco. Go cry about it, but don't post propaganda pictures like whackjob anti-abortionists do.

When you stop acting like a 3 year old and trying to make silly ass comments in every tobacco thread then I won't respond. Until then, I have just as much of a right to post in this thread as you do.

The first time I smoked, and several times subsequently, I got an extremely pleasant tobacco buzz. As surprising as it may seem, this buzz I got was way more intense than anything I've gotten from alcohol or weed... and I've been pass-out drunk/can't move high.

The reasons I continued to smoke before I quit were as follows: I liked the buzz, the process of smoking was enjoyable, and the good taste of the smoke became acquired.

The actual act of smoking a cigarette is very relaxing to me. I spend about 10$/wk on cigarettes (smoke 4-5 a day). I look at the cost as being that I can make one less trip to a fast food place. Cutting out McDonalds is probably better for me in the long run than all the cigs I smoke.

Pretty much. I hear people saying that they use it to relax and stuff, but it only relaxes you because you're uptight because you haven't smoked in awhile. People who don't smoke don't feel the stress creep up after an hour of not having a smoke.

Seriously, I think that people have a right to do what they want. If they want to smoke, they can. It's a fundamental right that you can do what you want. HOWEVER, I will never go against regulations that ban smoking. Life is a lot more pleasurable when you don't have smoke around, I've found. I say this because I've been in AZ for the past week where you can't smoke in public at all and it has been really nice. You may think it's a double standard, but for non-smokers it's such a great feeling when you don't have to breathe in second-hand smoke.

A phrase that I heard one person say to a whining passer-by on the sidewalk who stopped, interrupted our conversation, just to ask that same silly question.

 I agree. If you want to smoke, smoke. If you don't, don't. Either way, people need to shut the fuck up and quit forcing their opinion on others. Educate kids, let them know it is bad for you, etc, sure. But let adults make up their own damn mind. :)

Agreed. I'm not a smoker, never have been, never will be, but let people do what they want. I whole-heartedly agree with public smoking bans and such in restaurants and general retail (smoking bans in bars are retarded, but that's another thread), but as long as you're not blowing smoke in my face on the street, whatever. I think smoking is stupid....hell, I understand smoking pot (something I've never done) more than I do cigarettes....but if you want to smoke, then whatever.

My wife currently smokes, although she did quit once a long time ago for me until I fucked up our relationship at the time. My dad has smoked for 30 years, and back in January, decided he had had enough, and quit cold turkey. Along with the change, I helped him put in new flooring (carpet to wood) and painted the walls/ceiling, and his house has never smelled and looked better. He's not had a cigarette since. His only sibling, my aunt, died of smoking-related lung issues around 6 years ago, I'm surprised it took him this long to quit.

I don't get your post. It's not like it's some huge secret that smoking significantly raises your chances of cancer.

I can't stand cigarettes.
Never tried them, never will.
My dad always smoked and I just grew up hating the smell.
My dad is now on oxygen for his 60+ years of puffing away.

I like the comment " cigarettes are the only product that when used as directed will kill you "

Also I like watching old movies from the 1930's.
Its funny how every single scene has someone or everyone smoking.
