Cigar smokers - what makes Cubans so revered?

That's pretty much it. If you're not supposed to have it some people think it's the coolest shit ever. There were a bunch of kids at my school that bought a bunch of the booze/energy drinks when they were going to get banned, even though they all agreed they tasted like shit. There's just some people who get a kick out of stuff they aren't supposed to have.

I smuggled some Cubans out of Iraq (about half were confiscated by Navy customs in Kuwait) mostly because it was "cool"

Then I smoked them with a friend who had some high end Dominican Republic cigars from a reputable shop. The Cubans were shit in comparison.

Reminds me of this. 😀

My SIL used to bring me back some from a farm in Cuba when she used to visit there, they were pretty awesome. I haven't had any from there in years.

The forbidden fruit thing is bull as well as they are available pretty much everywhere on the planet and still thought highly off.

A vodka double blind would be interesting for vodka drinkers. If anyone wants to suggest the cheaper vodkas are anywhere near as smooth as the most expensive ones, they are just plain stupid. Now, I'm sure it gets to a point where the increase in price is near negligible for the increase in "quality". But, this would be a good way to find out. Rate them in order of smoothness and see where each averages.

I remember an episode of mythbusters where they were testing if you could turn bad vodka into good vodka by passing it through a water filter. They got a vodka expert who did a blind taste test of around 10 different drinks... a top shelf, a really cheap one, and the cheap one passed through the filter anywhere from 1-10 times. He was able to organize all ~10 drinks from worst to best, including how many times they went through the filter.

So I'm sure there are people out there who know their stuff, but there's probably a lot of posers too.
