Cicadas are preparing to uproot my yard *PICS*

They had a story on the news last night that talked about how the ground only needs to warm up (on average) 3 degrees before the Cicadas take over. They said the Cicadas will start to make "preparation" tunnels to the surface so when the ground finally hits 64 degrees F, they will have minimal digging to.

So I while I was mowing the back yard, I noticed I have *thousands* of the preparion tunnels. They look like little dirt mounds the size of a quarter (pic 1), and when you peel the caps off there are perfect little round tunnels (pic 2)

Every 17 years, when the ground averages a temperature of 64 degrees F, billions upon billions of these Cicadas come out and wreak havok. I'm not sure of the newscaster said there were going to be 50 billion TOTAL cicadas or 50 billion in the Cincinnati tri-state area.

Is it literally every 17 years? I thought it happened every year.. since it seems plausible they would get out of wack, ie: some hatch early etc...

So they are like little grasshoppers?

How long will they be around for? I was thinking you could just spray some weed-killer down the little holes and kill most of them off.

whoa, cicadas make those holes? I never knew that! Silly me, always thought they were mole tunnels or something.

There are dozens of groups, so there is at least 1 group hatching somewhere each year.

Ahh, I see. Yeah.

wow. read the CNN article. apparently this is a really big year.

Cicadas are those things you hear buzzing in the trees for all those asking what they are. Here in KY it is almost defeaning at times.

Cicadas freaked me out when I lived in Texas. Big fat green noisy bugs that fly into you . . . They're harmless, but the forelegs look pretty mean (Legs are serrated like a mantid to help them burrow underground). Worse--if you squish them, big gooey mess.

It's "every 17 years" in the same way that humans are "every 9 months". We get them every year in NW Ohio. Some years are heavier than others, but there are always some. It's not like they do any real damage to anything. Mayflies (aka "june bugs") are far more annoying.

get some huge nets and seal them over the lawn. when the cicadas die, you can fry 'em up and eat 'em(no joke).
You guys are crazy.

Bay Area, CA > *

We got beaches and hot wimmens... ...and illegals 🙁

Here in central Ohio we had these things a couple years ago. We're right on the edge of two broods so we could get them here again this year. I hate these things! They tear up the trees really bad when they lay their eggs, and the mice and voles and stuff go nuts on the larvae when they hatch. It basically throws the whole local ecosystem off for a couple years whenever they come :|

They do look pretty cool though. They look just like the green ones that come every year, except where those are green these ones are red. At night when they come up out of the ground you can hear the ground moving. It's really freaky.

When they were here the last time I got this wooden stake thing and when they would fly close to me I would use them to hone my ninja skills.

The 17-year variety are different than the ones that show up every year. And they really are "every 17 years". They come out of the ground by the gazillions, do their thing for a while, lay eggs, and you won't see them again for another 17 years.
