OMG! 15 employees out of 2800 employees at that facility got fired for drinking on their lunch break. It's pretty obvious that it's just a matter of time before they catch the other 2,785 employees.

In other news, dog bites man.

It's typical when you have unskilled or low skilled workers earning pretty damn good money and are guaranteed to never be out of a job because of commie UAW.

It does but when the Gov has to spend billions of $$ to bail out your sorry ass it just looks way worse..
Actually, this has been considered a UAW perk, or as UAW members call them, "fringe benefits", for a few decades now. The shop guys used to say "Well the executives get paid millions to sit around all day in their executive lounges, drinking their expensive brandy, smoking expensive Cuban cigars that are illegal in this country, and chase the secretaries around the desk, so this is our 'fringe benefit'". Many UAW members I knew seemed to be obsessed with comparing their incomes, compensation, benefits, perks, and working conditions to upper-management and top executives. It was just the culture that was promoted (if not required) by the UAW in those shops. It showed you were willing to "get some dirt on your hands" so they would know you were not of those 'company men'.

However, I would be shocked to learn that it still goes on remotely to the extent that it existed in the 1970s or 1980s, given the UAW had no other choice but to clamp down on *some* of this shit since the 1990s. I can almost guarantee it doesn't happen as much as it did 25 years ago.

It's Detroit...does anyone expect anything different?
When this story broke it dominated ALL the radio and TV talk shows here in Detroit for days. To say the the consensus of the community was to burn these idiots at the stake would be an understatement. I don't think the rest of the country really can appreciate just how bad things are here in D town. There a lot of hard working people making a third of what they used to and the anger directed toward these guys quite frankly surprised me.

I honestly almost felt like crying..

not only do they put people's life in danger..... drunk driving,, then drunk building....

This is SUBSTANTIAL damage towards the image of the American auto industry..

If you watch the whole video,, the Chrysler vp at the end of the video was almost to tears as well when he was trying to patch the situation...

D:... I was going to buy American for my next car, but I'm not sure what's there to be proud of about it any more.

emo...........

the japanese auto makers have the market

of course... because they make better cars.

i had an american car once... everytime it rained.. the car wouldn't start.

if that's the quality of cars detroit makes.. they should fail.

I have questions, but you probably don't have many answers.
How are old are you?
japs? I don't think it's a totally racist term, but I would discount any statement with that included. It definitely is ignorant.
Hard working American blue? Every time, the UAW seems to ruin that and for others.
Does that mean the Japanese don't work hard? My own stereotypical views say they work just as hard as anyone else.
I have no love for this current president, but I don't see how this tarnishes his image.
I guess you want our president to be a truant guard instead of a president.

Years ago (late 70s or early 80s), there was a "story" circulating around the auto media circles. A well-known executive at the Big Three was invited to come to Japan for an unprecedented tour of a state-of-art Japanese auto factory. He and a half-dozen others went, spent a whole day at the plant. He came back and pronounced the inevitable demise of the domestic auto industry.

What did this seasoned auto executive witness that would cause him to develop such a bleak outlook on the very survival of the domestic auto industry? The extensive use of automation and cutting-edge technology in the Japanese plant that was 20 years ahead of how things were done in US plants? Though he did note the superior use of automation and technology to improve efficiency, quality control, and substantially reduce labor costs, that wasn't it. Some new-fangled engineering approach or philosophy that was light-years ahead of the US industry? Nope.

"The employees were actually working."

eh. Most likely a valid observation back then.
I wouldn't say that is the case across the board in today's day and age.
QC is all about effective management and process these days.
Ford changed their stuff for the better, and they didn't replace any workers.
(As far as production goes). Layoffs yeah.

Toyota and Honda aren't going for the better. Toyota has some serious QC things to take care of. Honda has some engineering, marketing and design stuff that needs attention. After the Insight bombed, and the near future Civic rushed back to the drawing board, Acura noses being laughed at, they have to relearn what it means to be the Honda of old again.

It's all a cycle. When companies reach the comfort zone, they get complacent.

I use these terms simply because I am absolutely not racist... I choose consciously to blot out all racist connotations.. this is how we should all live..

You're the one harboring racial biases and this egotistical elitist attitude. FUCK YOU.. and your mother.

The drunk workers makes our president look like an idiot, because not long ago he was there speaking about how he believed in these workers.

Form is just as important as function. this has always been the case... bad image impairs function..... image of low gas efficiency translates to lower sales, lower sales means less revenue, less rnd, worse cars overall..

You and your narrow scope of childish beliefs is and will hold you back. grow up.

ALSO ,, fuck you

The lack of patriotism is exactly why this country is falling apart... I'm not even fucking born here,, and I have way more love for this side of the rock than most of my peers... people take for grant all day just how good we have it here.. I would've been satisfied with running water,,, but no,, i get running hot water,,, free houses courtesy of the bubble,, and essentially free cars too. You fucker, better go to work tomorrow with a smile just for that....

most unions will not support you if you get caught drinking on the job. I know ours wont (CWA). it puts other around the drinker at a higher risk for injury.

Yep. As a heavy equipment operator, we had a "zero tolerance" policy for drinking or drugs. NO ONE should be permitted to drink or get stoned while on the clock...or before they clock in. I don't care if you're building cars, scrubbing floors, or doing brain surgery...stay straight during your work hours and do whatever on your own time.

Doesn't seem that fucking difficult to understand.

The UAW treats drunkenness and substance abuse as a "disease". Your medical insurance pays for you to go into some rehab program and you're back in like Flynn, usually an out-patient program where you are back to work within a couple weeks. Mostly symbolic, keep your nose clean for a while kind of thing. e.g. if you go one full year without getting into trouble, it will be expunged from your record as though it never happened and you can start at the bottom rung of the progressive discipline ladder again. You really have to kill someone or get caught with a bomb or something to get fired.
