Chrysler forms alliance with Fiat, CEO steps down

bad move Fiat.

What a shit time to be an enthusiast of muscle cars. 🙁

Not really. Fiat is looking for American manufacturing and an avenue to sell cars here. This gives them access to an established dealer network and a company with established factories, workers, and partnerships with suppliers.

all of which have been failures which have driven Chrysler to the ground with no profits.

What is Fiat's reputation these days? I haven't followed them since the eighties, but back then they had a pretty lousy reputation. So bad they stopped importing them into the US.

They're one of the largest auto manufacturing companies in the world.

BTW-I hope the former CEO of Chrysler isn't getting a huge severance package.

You mean like the $200,000,000.00 that he received from Home Depot when he run them into the ground before leaving?

Yeah, exactly like that.

Well, Nardelli didn't take over Chrysler until August of 2007, and agreed to a $1 salary.

He has no golden parachute, but Chrysler was in deep before he got there.

He will return to a lucrative job at Cerberus. Perhaps he will run GMAC. 😀

Jim Press is VERY excited about fiat. I spoke with him about it in january and he was like a puppy dog almost. Of course, I have since found out that he's always pretty excitable, but it was still pretty interesting to visit with him. He told me that right now chrysler is very strong in trucks, minivans and jeeps, which make up about 50% of the US market today. However, in 15 years they should only be about 20% of the market. Chrysler didn't have enough good "car" designs in the pipeline, so a merger/alliance was a must no matter what happened with the US government. Fiat is nearly a perfect fit for us, since they're strong where we are weak (small/mid-size cars) and we have the trucks and US manufacturing capacity that they need to get back into the US market. This alliance is by no means a slam dunk, but I can't help but think that if mercedes had hired him 10 years ago when they bought chrysler that they never would have spun it off.

Here's some info on Jim: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Press

what that article doesn't say is that Jim basically built toyota in the US from the ground up. Toyota people I know still revere him. He brought a few of his friends with him when he jumped to chrysler. Jim was part of the 3 man "executive team" with bob nardelli and tom lasorda, but bob is going back to cerberus and tom has decided to retire.

Chrysler is by no means out of the woods these days, but with the plan in place and the people in charge I do think that the outlook is much better today than it was a few months ago.

It was Fiat or Nothing.

If that were really true, FIAT would have a larger share, and FIAT would have had to contribute more to prop up Chrysler, imo.

FIAT is just there to make the deal look fair, imo. Decoration.

Why do you think that? Chrysler needed some $ to keep going, Fiat provides that. The Government was not going to continue providing $.
