Chrysler 300 overrated

JulesMaximus

No Lifer
I rented this for a week when I was in Maui last week so I thought I'd comment on it a bit. No, it didn't have a Hemi but I honestly don't see an engine forgiving the major shortcomings of this car.

Things I hated:

-Poor outward visibility
-High door sills
-Strong tendancy to understeer...badly...very badly
-Big heavy car...drives like a big heavy car
-Seats uncomfortable for anything over 30 minutes of driving
-You notice the engine idling (it shakes the car)
-Underpowered

Things I liked:

-Roomy interior & trunk
-Interesting styling inside and out
-Hemi might make up for one or two of the things I hated about this car

I could not find a really comfortable seat position in this car and after about 40 minutes of driving my back felt it. The outward visibility is horrible and the blind spots are huge. Sitting in the car feels like you are sitting low in a bucket, you cannot rest your arm on the sill because it is so high (I am 5'11"). I honestly don't know why this car gets such rave reviews by the automotive press quite frankly. I think it is overrated. Compared to my '03 Maxima I'd take the Maxima any day of the week.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed at all. I had a woman come up and ask how I liked it and I mentioned some of the things I mentioned above. She said she was thinking of buying one but after hearing about the poor outward visibility and the high doorsills I think she was having serious doubts.

I bet the Magnum wagon is just as bad or worse. I had my choice between the two but chose the 300.

This car had 3700 miles on it BTW.

You're right. The Maxima is waaay out of the league of this car.

Maxima is awesome, sportiness and interior space in one package. I remember a few years back the Maxima had the most overall front seat interior space of any sedan, including LS400 and Towncar.

kinda like a maxima?

Maxima weighs slightly over 3200 lbs and is quite nimble for a car as roomy as it is.

The base Chrysler 300 is 3700 lbs, is much slower and feels about 1000 lbs heavier by comparison.

Edit-I didn't really mean this to become a Maxima vs 300 thread. I was just comparing it to a similarly sized car that I happen to own.

Yeah, seriously. If you buy a 300, you're going to 1) throw it on dubz and 2) cruise around slow so people can see you blingin'.

Wrong. There are things you can fault the Chrysler 300 for, but steering is not one of them. I've driven it. What you've experienced is a car that steers properly.

Now the Maxima, that's a car that steers all on it's own. It's a torque steering piece of junk.

That and the Chrysler 300C actually looks decent, whereas only a riceboy would be caught dead in a Maxima.

Cheers.

Did you actually drive the car around a corner or try to make a turn quickly in it? If you did I think you would notice that it really plows badly into a corner. Maybe the larger rims and lower profile tires on the non-rental fleet versions aren't as bad but the one I drove did not corner well at the limit.

I will admit that the Maxima does have copious amounts of torque steer but that is only under hard acceleration. It corners fairly well and drives much better.

My .02

Dude, I own a 2000 SE, hopefully a 2004 SL come Monday, and the 300C will kick the sh!t out of the Maxima. The C is classy, way more roomier, and rides like a dream.

How do you know how his car steered? Maybe the 300c with a Hemi oversteers when you gun the engine, but I doubt the 300 base model with 190 hp is gonna get that rear end loose. The steering on the Maxima is good. It's a tiny bit vague on center, but good in the corners. With rear sway bar, Maxima can oversteer under hard cornering. Torque steer is not really a problem once you are going.

I'm just suprised no one has said:

"OMGWTFCHICKBYTEHCAR she is teh hawt, More pics or teh banned is j00"

Dude, I own a 2003 SE and the 300 is a big POS compared to my car. It corners like a pig and is much much slower. I am not talking about the V8 powered car.

Personally, I don't think pleather, "styling" and some clock like gauges make a car classy.

My Maxima isn't going to get preferential treatment by the valets at your local fine dining establishment but neither is the 300.

The negatives of the 300 far outweigh the positives in my opinion.

So you drive the base car and bitch that it is slow. Makes sense  Let's not mention the fact that you must be a midget (or morbidly obese) and can't swing your legs over the sill.

BTW, R&T said the 300's seats are excellent for long road trips.

Finally, the idle is "rough" on the 3.5L, but no one has said it is uncomfortable, other than you.

lets see... do you actually own a maxima or a 300?

OP expresses his little personal review is all, no need to start a flame

and what does R&T and C&D and MT or edmunds say have to matter? where did you come from, the C&D forum where everyone yells "american muscle"?
