I was sad when I first found out that the Chrono Trigger Resurrection Project was canceled. Chrono Trigger is an awesome game that would benefit greatly from a 3D remake using today's technology. It's unfortunate that a totally free, independent remake cannot be produced because of IP rights. I understand that they want to protect the legacy of CT and reserve for themselves the possibility of doing a CT remake in the future, but a faithful remake of the game would be incredible.

A Chrono Trigger anime movie, or possibly a mini series like they did with Tales of Phantasia (which wasn't too good), animated by Toriyama/Bird Studio (of DB/DB:Z,GT fame) would be perfect. Akira Toriyama was the character designer for Chrono Trigger and he handled the cutscenes for the PS1 port (you can tell by his distinctive drawing style, with Crono looking a lot like a red haired Goku or SS4 Gogeta, and Magus looking a bit like Vegeta). Someone already made a full movie script (I haven't read it yet), but it's doubtful that SE would even consider it. If there was even a chance they would, I would make one myself :D

exactly, I have no problem for them canceling the project even if this team wanted to do it for free. what I don't understand is why they didn't buy the game from them.

As retarded as letting a bunch of amateurs handle a remake of one of the most cherished square franchises of all time?

Hah, amateurs... I guess someone forgot to read who exactly comprised the team that was making this game. Before their site shut down and stuff, they were noted as people that were already in the gaming/media business. They were professionals that liked the game and wanted to see it redone.

Considering the trailer shows little but a few cutscenes and zero gameplay, I'll continue to believe its nothing but an amateur job. Everyone makes it sound like they were basically done, when they had very little to show.

Dont get me wrong, amateurs can create incredible things (CS, for instance), but its not like theyre making anything new or special. Theyre adapting an old game to a new look - that doesnt take talent, that takes cashola to hire a massive amount of artists to make it happen more than anything else.

The makers of this adaptation should have known from the start this would happen, and I'm sorry, I just dont see SE as being in the wrong here for protecting their IP from an unauthorized hack job pretending to be a proper remake. As long as there is money to be made, SE will whore out all their franchises. It'll happen eventually.

They weren't done but a demo was slated to be released only a little bit after when Square served 'em with a C&D. Also, if I remember correctly, the trailer is from various parts of the game... how does that not suggest that there is/was a relatively decent amount done?

CHRONO CROSS

I don't think anyone in this thread is asking for a sequel, but for a remake with updated graphics, audio, etc. Besides, Chrono Cross was not a true (or at least not a direct) sequel, though it did take place in the same multiverse. I myself don't consider CC (or Radical Dreamers) to be a sequel in the traditional sense, but more like an alternate timeline or universe. While all 3 games share elements, and are more directly related to one another than the games of the FF series, they are different enough from each other to be treated as separate entities and not prequels or sequels to one another. That's just my opinion, though, and probably not even the same opinion as the creators of these games.

What game? All I saw was a snazzy title screen, a cutscene showing very little but a bunch of character models, animations and environments. If thats the best they have to show, theyre decades away from completing it.

You mean they were decades away from completing it, now that they've been forced to desist from working on it. The project was still in it's early stages before it got shut down, with a handful of part-time developers. It's entirely possible that they would have been able to recruit more people and come up with a polished and high quality game within a matter of 2- 3 years had they not been shut down. Don't underestimate the power of "a bunch of amateurs" to create a quality game.

It's also possible that they could have created half finished, bug ridden mess of a game which would have made both Chrono Trigger and Squaresoft look bad. I don't Squaresoft wants to risk letting "a bunch of amateurs" screw up what could be one of their most profitable IPs.

Profitable IP? Is it still raking in the dough somewhere that I'm not aware of?

Seriously, if SE does another remake they'll prolly just slap some anime cut scenes in on it and leave the rest of the game untouched like they did with the remake of CT that they already did. You people act like SE is just waiting to do a remake of CT. They don't even plan to remake FF7 and that is far more popular than CT (although worse imo).

That's why I said could be I doubt they're making any money off it now but if they ever do remake the game it'll surely make piles of cash.

I don't know what video you guys are watching, the one I was linked to outside of this thread (and I'd have to go track it down now) I believe showed a largely in-game engine, showed a rendering of the original starting room as well as in-game combat. It looked like it demoed a functioning engine that would have created an amazing 3d version of CT.

They nearly completely remade FF3 and FF4 for the DS in 3D. I think its virtually a given theyre going to remake FF7 at some point in time, although thats obviously going to be a much costlier endeavor since we're looking at PS3 or later for that to happen.

Square is not going to stop making remakes, and obviously CT is on the short list. Probably see a FF6 remake in 3D before FF7 or CT though. But it will happen. Its as sure a thing as Call of Duty 14 and Madden 2032, and those are pretty much set in stone at this point.
