Radical Dreamers.

Chrono Trigger was great though I liked the storytelling and soundtrack in Chrono Cross a bit more.

Yeah, I actually thought about this thread and realized I got the name wrong. I was hoping no one would catch me on it so I could ninja edit it!

I actually liked the Chrono Trigger music more so than the Chrono Cross music, but that doesn't mean CC didn't have good music. CT's music may simply be more memorable to me.

Spent the weekend English IPS patching about 22 never released in the US games to try out my new Super Everdrive flash cart on a real SNES. Now just waiting for the Sony PVM RGB monitor and scart / bnc cables hopefully this week.

Also have an original SFC Star Ocean cart I'm going mod by piggy backing a translated rom in a 32 mbit EPROM to the existing mask ROM with a switch tied to the /CE pins to select from original or modded. This way I don't need to remove anything or destroy the original cart. Cant play this one on a flash cart due to the special S-DD1 decompression chip.

Old skool FTFW.

I enjoyed it but think it's overrated. The game plays well enough but the characters seemed really shallow to me, and I only played it once but I seem to remember it being pretty easy.

Completely entitled to your (wrong :p) opinion, but what is your favorite game of all time? Or at least favorite nostalgic RPG?

Skies of Arcadia, the combat isn't the greatest and it can also be pretty easy but the sheer depth of the world and the whole exploration aspect and the boat battles and the scale of the game are excellent.

Further back, Ogre Battle 64 or Harvest Moon 64 if you count them, and finally Super Mario RPG even though its really simple in nature I loved the style and it had such a great cast and even a little emotional depth to it.

I just never got that out of CT, like when Chrono 'dies' and comes back it felt like "Oh crap Chrono is gone now how are we going to complete our quest." and "Oh good Chrono is back now we can continue our quest." I played the game the whole way through once (not that long ago either) and it just felt hollow and not a lot of it even stuck with me. The only really memorable point (storywise) was when the Robot enters the robot factory and ends up being attacked by his brothers, that was actually pretty interesting. I know nowadays we have a lot more ways to storytell give a visual experience, but even for the time I don't feel like the writing adequately conveyed much of anything in the limited opportunities the story presented.

Some characters are a bit shadow, I'll agree. Also, it is pretty easy.

Still a great game though.

Well to each his own. Nothing wrong with having your own tastes but I'm finding it quite engrosing again and not hollow. I agree with Super Mario RPG though that's one of my all time favs as well!!!

Robo also had to fight his robot love, Atropos, in the factory as well.

Some characters weren't as blatantly obvious in their intentions... probably the best example being Magus/Janus. He actually isn't evil, and only does his dastardly deeds to summon and kill Lavos. Just trying to find his sister! :'(

Did you ever fail Lucca's dream where she's supposed to save her mom? That MIDI screech gave me nightmares for weeks!

I think in some ways, the game was interesting because of how things ended up tying together throughout the different ages. Everything wasn't completely obvious... or at least it wasn't when I first played it. :p

Yes it's the epic scale of the game and its atmosphere more than anything that make it so good. The art direction is superb and each time period is perfectly conceived. The gloomy atmosphere of the dystopian future contrasts so well with the celebratory feeling of "the millennium" and the fearful atmosphere of 600AD. Throw in the ability to hop effortlessly from one time period to another and to affect the future through acts you take in the past and you get something really special. Combine this with what is arguably one of the best gaming sound tracks in history and you have an experience that's unparalleled. The fact that some of the characters are a little shallow doesn't bother me at all, and some of them aren't shallow at all as you point out. And then of course as you point out there are the greatly varied endings. We aren't just talking about getting a different ending screen either here, these are truly different story endings!

Definitely loved that game. Chrono Cross doesn't compare imo...I played through it and wanted to like it, but I could never get into the story or the characters (a few really good music tracks though).

I've got Marle's necklace charged up by the Mammon machine and I'm now going all over the place unlocking the magically sealed doors and treasure chests. Loving it still!!!

Damn that dungeon in the desert in 600 AD is TOUGH! Will have to come back to that later.

Never played it, I should someday.

this

If we are going into PS1, then Xenogears takes all easily. Sorry Crono :(

Nothing will change your perspective on life and raise the hairs on your neck like Xenogears.

I still contend that the game sucked ass. incomplete production is obvious.

granted, it does go a few levels in scope beyond the typical mind-numbing fare that passes for plotting in a JRPG of the time (or any time), but it is still contrived and cliched in the broader scope of sci-fi, fantasy, fiction myth.

Chrono Trigger, SNES, SCART RGB cable, SCART to RGBS 4x BNC, Sony PVM-20M4U RGB monitor, separate shielded audio cable to Klipsch 2.1 sound system, saving to non volatile FeRAM and backing up to SD card. Heaven.

I've just gotten the Wings of Time ship in the game and have gone back to 12,000BC.

Playing through it for the (I don't know how many-nth) time, this time on the DS.

This was a game so awesome I first discovered it in 1995, but couldn't afford it, being a kid. My brother and would rent it consecutively from the video store, easily four or five times in a row.
I actually beat the game twice as a rental before ever actually owning the SNES cart.

Yeah I'm playing the DS version too. There are two added optional side quest sections that you can do as well.

One of the best games of all time, I still have an SNES cart for it. Phantasy Star IV was another amazing RPG from the same generation.

Some fan made a rom hack of Chrono trigger called Crimson Echoes that is pretty impressive. It basically bridges the gap between Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. The story is very well done.

Didn't like it. I played for a few hours, but couldn't get into it. I've got a modded Xbox, so maybe I'll throw it on the SNES emulator to check it out.

The sequels are horrific.

Sequels? There's only one Chrono Cross for PS and it's almost equally as well received. Are you sure you are talking about the same game?

Do you enjoy 16-bit era RPGs? Can you name any you like?

Because if you do, I don't see how you can't like Chrono Trigger. It's the nearly perfect JRPG.
