Some people are working on an unofficial sequel, (link) - it is in 3d, sort of, it uses the environments of CT and turns them into 3d, but they are writing a new story, which will include the people from the original CT. right now work on it is at a standstill, but i'm sure someday it will be finished (hopefully), you can download an alpha, its somewhat interesting.

keep in mind it is an alpha, the sound didnt work for me, it is reeeeally buggy, but it gives you an idea of the graphics at least.

one of the people working on it, gangis, hangs out alot in the same irc channel as me, and one day i saw the link to this in his quit message. very cool :D

edit: i guess i didnt make it clear, gangis is one of the people working on it

hmmmmm, sounds like a good idea. Good luck trying to sell it though, and/or getting past a million and one copyrights. I guess it's all in fun though, and it'd be some crap if it actually came out good.

you've been asleep! the closest thing we'll ever get to a fft sequel is a game called hoshigami, and came out in the us in the past month or two. its supposed to be very good :D:D:D

i only played a bit of chrono chross but it didnt seem to have the same magic as chrono trigger, however, like i said, i only played a little.

why wont we have another tactics? i mean they put the original on the Playstations greatest hits list, so it must be pretty popular...

I heard hoshigami wasn't very good (or at least it got bad reviews)

i dont know why we didnt get fft2, probably because it wouldnt sell as well as certain other games, and square has seem to stray from non-billion dollar making products lately :(

everything i've heard about hoshigami has been good, it was done, from what i know, by a bunch of guys who were obsessed with being better than atlas (the maker of tactics ogre, ogre battle, and some of their people worked on fft), and did a good job, the only thing about hoshigami is that its supposed to be HARD. it's like a hardcore fft, with better graphics and no cutesy chocobos and whatnot. oh, and atlus published it:p

heres the site: http://www.hoshigami.net/hoshigami_e/index.html

hmm.. videogames.com gave it a 7.1 (not that good by videogames.com standards), plus out of an average of 62 reader reviews (ordinary gamers) gave it a 7.0. So its doenst look like it will be a great game, but im probably still gonna play it.

I read on ign. it was released Aug 2001, (mabye thats just the japanese version though)

Hey, don't knock Secret of Mana too much there, it's still alright. It was a great -in between FF games- game at the time (the pinnacle of 2d, no wait the pinnacle of gaming period that was the mid nineties and Super Nintendo (and Sega Genesis).
