ChromeOS Imaging

I am working on a project that requires us to use ChromeOS (writing documentation for students using Chromebooks.)

We have an Acer C7 Chromebook. But having access to two ChromeOS machines would make things easier on us.

I have a Lenovo X131e Netbook (Win8), which is also sold as a ChromeBook. I know that I can probably compile and use Chromium OS, but it lacks some features like Flash and doesn't auto-update. Also, the latest builds of ChromiumOS are broken in VirtualBox, so I can't dry-run or operate in a VM.

So my question is, can I just dd the the C7's boot drive to the X131e and expect it to work? Maybe? Possibly? Or are ChromeOS installations not that generic?

TIA

If you just need a virtual machine there are prebuilt VMs of ChromiumOS here:
http://chromeos.hexxeh.net

If you need it to be on a physical machine I have no clue, I have an Acer C720 but have never thought about trying to install Chrome OS somewhere else.

I have a hexxeh build running in a VM already - they're a year out of date, no updates, and the included version of Chrome doesn't work with the web app store.

This guy has taken over the nightly build process:

But the video drivers don't work in VirtualBox.

(Thanks for the reply though, I'm mostly just posting because the hexxeh.net guy is still tops in google rankings even though his website hasn't been updated in a year+. It's not fair.)

I think you should try it and see what happens. There are no ISO's of ChromeOS even in the wild so I think dd might be your best bet. Let us know how it goes!🙂

Further reading indicates that Chromebooks have some kind of magic hardware dongle that allows booting into ChromeOS.

*scowl*

I'm going to try it this weekend anyway. I'll let y'all know.
