Chrome vs Firefox

OK, I am long time Firefox user. I left IE because it really sucked many years ago. And Firefox got me hooked. I have used the latest IE (I have a new laptop) and find it to be garbage compared to Firefox. So, I don't care to go back to IE.

So to date, Firefox has not disappointed me. So I have no reason to leave.

what am I missing out on with Chrome? For the record, The speed of Firefox on my desktop and latop is not bad. And this includes an older Athlon 2800+ based desktop. So, "faster" is not a reason I have to look at alternatives. What other reasons are there to consider Chrome?

Besides speed, I think the best thing about chrome is that it separates plugins and tabs into different processes to make it more stable. But, the current beta of firefox 3.6.4 does the plugin separation too and is due out in the next few weeks.

Firefox is more customizable and can do a lot more things via extensions. However, it can be noticeably slower, not so much with page rendering but with the interface itself.

I prefer the simple UI of chrome.

And Firefox may be fast for you, but one can always go faster.

only thing i find slower in FF is startup.

For people that run FF vanilla then chrome would be better.

ONe thing i really lke about chrome is when you right click on something like http://www.goog.com it has the go to link shortcut.

If that was meant to be a plain text link, then the Text Link extension in Firefox is what you need--simply double click to open.

My chrome mouse gestures simply did not work on some webpages. So that was extremely frustrating. If there is a fix it might be enough to make me go back. I did notice chrome being a tad faster than FF.

memory bloating in chrome still happens. i've had atot tabs climb to 500mbs of usage left open doing nothing for a few hours.

Fuck Chrome, I checked my memory usage today and the main browser was using 930 megs of memory. I wasn't on a page chocked full of Flash or anything major. I had 4 other tabs open and my memory usage was close to 150megs each for them. Thinking it had to be something up with my PC. I rebooted, reloaded Chrome and when I checked a few hours later, sure enough it was over a gig of memory. Right now it's down to a low 650'ish megs for 4 tabs.

I've seen that too but mostly in sites that like to use javascript to automatically update like Facebook and GMail, I just figured those scripts were causing Chrome to refresh the display and only hide the older data but not discard it.

Chrome isn't as light as people make it out to be. It's every bit as heavy as Firefox. It's definitely faster than Firefox, but the little bit of speed boost isn't worth the severe lack of features for me.

There does seem to be some exaggeration about the lighweightedness of Chrome, but so far the per-process tab separation has made it worthwhile for me. And ideally it would also mean better performance since the OS' scheduler can take care of getting the individual tabs their CPU time instead of making one process manage all of them individually, although currently I think the parent/manager process still gets in the way of that somewhat. Of course that's just speculation based upon what I've seen, I haven't taken the time to look at the source yet.

The whole thing crashed or just a single tab? I've manually killed a few tabs but I don't think I've ever seen one crash on it's own.

Odd, I don't do much with Flash but I have done a bit and I can't remember any crashes. Let a lone one that took down the entire browser, that's the whole point of the separate process for plugins. Maybe it was a Chrome/Flash on Windows thing.

Right now I have 9 tabs open, nothing more than text and some images. the biggest chrome process is using 1.1 gigs of memory, 540 for the next, 120 ish for the rest. Chrome is epic win for memory usage on my system.

*caculating* 2033MBs used by Chrome right now, if this ain't a memory leak that's sad shit. HL2 with the 20 gig uber hi res texture pack and HL2.exe is hovering around 300 megs.

Yep. I use the latest version on a fresh OS install and it will sometimes just sit there shitting its pants for 30 seconds for no particular reason.

And it's not one iota faster than FF by my seat of the pants benchmark.
