Chrome question

Is it normal for Chrome to leave its processes in your task manager after you exit the browser? It will leave at least 15!

Go to Settings, show advanced, scroll all the way down and uncheck the "Allow Chrome to continue running in the background" or however it's worded. If it's still running in the background after you close it yes that would not be normal.

Thx. I'll try that. I uninstalled it for the time being though, because I'm wanting to see if it's the reason for my Internet sluggishness.

Also you can set the Google Update services to "Manual" instead of automatic and the Google Update Tasks to disabled if you want to disable auto-update. In order to update Chrome itself in that case all you have to do is go to Help -> About Google Chrome page and it'll check for updates then. I can't say I recommend this but beyond that Chrome really shouldn't have any other interaction with your system.

Where's the option to manually update?

Despite me changing the option to not run in the background, it still does. I even uninstalled the default extensions and I disabled the only extension I have installed, Authy and when I close Chrome the processes remain.

I utterly hate this browser and only have it when other websites won't work in Pale Moon.

You just navigate to the Help -> About Google Chrome page. It checks for an update. If there is one it'll download, install, and a button will show up to restart/relaunch the browser. If there is no update then you just get a blue check mark and nothing happens.

I've never experienced the behavior that you're seeing with Chrome. You could try disabling some of the background components[1] although even if I launch Chrome with no command line arguments and let everything run as normal I still don't see the behavior that you're experiencing. If I close Chrome it closes, all process, full stop.

It's a command line option, right click the Chrome shortcut and add it at the end of the target line (outside the quotations if it has any). You may also want to try disabling the option related to keeping Chrome open for the "Push API" in chrome://flags. I can't look it up right now but I'll edit this later to include the specific name.

It should be noted that none of this should be required to get the behavior you desire. I'm not sure why Chrome is refusing to close completely in your case.

Well, the command in target didn't work. Not sure about that API thing. And the only extension I have is Authy. I removed it and I still have Chrome in the task manager on exit.

I have had some flaky things here and I don't know what the hell is going on. And I have scanned the living crap out of the computer with everything and anything. I even use Sandboxie and VooDoo Shield. Thinking about buying a new laptop anyway, so when I reuse this SSD I'll format the damn thing.

Using Chrome in sandboxie could cause processes to hang on exit IIRC. Try without sandboxie or any other additional "security" software if you haven't already, not sure if you're using Chrome inside it or not. Sandboxie doesn't really add anything to the sandbox that Chrome already provides since the latter is already stronger than whatever sandboxie could do. Same goes for whatever VooDoo Shield is. Any of that stuff is basically superfluous to what Chrome already has built-in (and could possibly cause issues considering how they hook Windows functions).

No, I don't use Chrome in Sandboxie. I said I use Sandboxie and VooDoo Shield because there is no way something got on here and made my computer wonky.
