Chrome Orb on a Socket A 1GHz Thunderbird?

My friend's current heatsink and fan is a POS, it is LOUD as hell and isn't even good (I had to order it to get a 1 year warranty on the CPU...we were ordering a lot of stuff from this place and the shipping was reallllly cheap so we went for it). I have an s370 gorb and it is almost silent, so I am wondering if the Chrome Orb will sufficiently cool a 1GHz Thunderbird. I know that there was one orb that was only recommended up to certain speeds. BTW, will it fit on the KT7 just fine? I know people wit KT7 RAIDs are having trouble...and I know the only difference between those two boards are the addition of the two extra IDE channels for RAID and the RAID chip. 🙁

So, if the chrome orb won't work, what else is quiet and good for this CPU?

Thanks.

your friend probably has a taisol heatsinc/fan. I suggest you keep it. I dont think a chrome orb can cool it down enough. Heck it's not even on the AMD recomended list.

ctowle, thanks, but I am looking for something even more quiet. I think he is around 46-48`C with his current one. :disgust: I am thinking of maybe just getting him a FOP32-1...its not as loud as his current HS/FAN and is a LOT better!

The tcwo is a vantec. Had both and the fop32 is much better but not any quiter, if anything the its higher pitched due to the fop having more fins.

Tonec, really, other than the gorbs and articoolers, there are no truly quiet heatsinks so... 🙁

Yeah FOP32-1 is what he is gonna use. 🙂

Hey do you know if a fop 32 - 1 will fit on an abit kt7 raid board?
i'm thinking of getting a taisol but i don't know...what is the diff?
what is the best value of the two?
(for athlon 950 socket)

KT7Raid has a smaller area around the socket than the regular KT7. If you're buying the chrome orb than be careful because there are two different size orbs out there.coolerguys .com has pics of both
Recently tried the taisol and its the quietest of cooler I've owned. Bios/viahm will tell you thats its cooling within 1-2 degrees of the fop38 but in reality the difference is greater. But it still cools well enough that you don't have to worry. My duron at 1000 1.85 works fine with it. The taisol performs better than it looks and is about as loud as a standard intel retail heatsink. The fop32 is good overall choice though, just tell him to flex the clips before installing because that it is nearly impossible to get on right out of the box.

Hey Tonec...do you know if the 80X60X45 will fit on the abit kt7 raid or would it be better to get a 60X60X45X ...

hey zippy any luck finding a quiet hsf?
I have the retail fan for the athlon socket 950 it's so freakin loud....

grrr.....

"Quiet" is a very subjective term. I think most modern heatsink/fans are pretty quiet. I have an Alpha Pal3065 with a Sunon 23.5 cfm fan and with the case closed up and 3 80mm case fans it is kept to a low hum. The Chrome Orb actually has a faster spinning somewhat louder fan compared to the Intel Orbs. My personal recommendation would be a Fop32-1 since they are relatively cheap, good performance, fairly quiet.

Losty,

The TAISOL CEK733092 is the absolute best value for money. Absolutely nothing comes close. Thermaltake and their mant variety of ORBsjust don't impress me at all, all show no blow 😉.

Taisols are rated over 1gig but you are getting to the top of the temp range, if you have very good case cooling go for the TAISOL but if your case cooling is marginal your gonna need the FOP-38 and the increased noise. The Delta Black Label fan fits the TAISOL so its an upgrade option also.

So...zippy's going for the fop? ... i'll go for the taisol and we'll compare it some day...hehe

does anyone know where i can get it cheap? i'm looking at the taisol home page...19.XX after tax and shipping...
does anyone want one? it's cheaper with 2 ...

thanx for the advice and good luck zippy...

Just to let you know, I got an orb looking HSF with my motherboard, blue instead of gold or chrome. I also got a KT7-RAID and I had to grind off a chunk of the HS just to get it on the chip (there are 3 or 4 capacitors in the way)

my chrome orb keeps my duron 650 happy at max voltages. 1.85v and 650@935 (8.5x110) runs fine, but i dont want to kill my chip and mobo. I run 1.825v; 650@892 (8.5x105); with a chrome orb and its stable as could be. Unfortunately being the retared alcoholic that I am, I managed to seriously destroy my thermal prove, so the actual cpu temp is a mystery 😛
Go to inflowdirect to see a good selection. I've bought from them and was happy.

BTW, there are new chrome orbs that are smaller in diameter for boards like the KT7...

Actually, I think I'm going to get the Taisol then if it is quiet. Yeah, that fan on it is rather small and LOOKS quiet. He has a 1GHz Tbird...I'm going to get him some thermal grease (thermal pads suck donkey balls!) and hopefully taht will keep his chip cool.
