Chrome & memory useage...

everybody talks about how bad ff is w/ memory useage, w/ chrome i have 3 tabs open and there are 4 entries into task manager of 22MB-45MB each. open the same 3 tabs in ff and it uses ~20% less memory.

it is like chrome uses a tab, but actually creates another instance of itself...wtf? why 40MB+ for entering this post/thread?

er yea, chrome makes separate instances, it uses more ram but it increases reliability as each tab can be killed separately if it crashes.
that being said yes i use firefox...load up chrome with dozens of tabs and it gets ugly fast

for one thing, too many people see high memory usage and automatically think "OMG memory leak!" when it's not necessarily the case. I have most of the major browsers installed. They all routinely use over 100mb. I don't understand when some people complain when they do. You get a lot of complaints about memory usage there.

Multiple process browsers will always use a good chunk of memory. However, I find the difference between Chrome and Firefox is that while they both use a lot of memory, at least Chrome seems to release it much quicker and is of course a lot easier to deal with when having a problematic tab or plugin.

Fortunately, I never really have more than 10 tabs at a time.

One of Chrome's main features is that each tab, plugin, etc is a separate process. There's probably a lot of shared pages between those processes though so the memory usage is going to be lower than it looks in task manager.

after using ff for years, chrome does seem to be faster than ff. i have enough memory, but was wondering why i have read why people claimed chrome was lean when ff was getting bloated.

all-and-all, i am liking chrome.

nothingman - on a side note - what debian distro should i try out in a vm enviornment? been a win person way to long and want to get some other os's to mess around w/, if nothing else just for the experience.
