When he was first paralyzed, he couldn't even breathe on his own. I'm not sure what all his abilities evolved to recently, but it was a lot more than laying there like a vegetable on a respirator.

Did Michael J Fox give a horses ass about parkinsons before he got it? Probably not.

To me it doesn't matter when or why he did the things he did, but just that he did them at all.

I'm sure the people out there doing research on various ailments were not ALL touched by personal tragedies of the sort they are trying to cure.

I agree, that what he did was a valuable contribution to the cause, but to get all the praise for it, well that kind of praise should be reserved for the people out there who do things without ulterior motives IMO.

He built up a tolerance...he could breathe on his own up to 45mins at a time. He had ZERO other motor control.

I have the exact same injury just 4-5 vertebrae lower. My gf is also an SCI of 14 years (shot by a lawnmower in her bedroom at 7). She met him 4 years ago, and hated him.

Sorry, but I don't think it matters if the person has an "ulterior motive" before they launch into a lifetime of creating support and income or attention for a just cause.

I think it's taking a lemon and making lemonade. All the little kidnapped/murdered kids, the parents went out of their way to create laws to protect someone else's kid. If more money can be gained because a celeb like Chris Reeve or MJ Fox lend their stature I think that's great.

I'm of the same opinion as you. It doesn't take anyway any of my respect for Christopher Reeve just because he was personally affected by it. The way he handled his misfortune and the way he rose up to help others in his same predicament, was really amazing to me.
 
Switching Channels was the best movie Christopher Reeve was ever in. Not top mention Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner were in it too, but it's F'n hilarious.
