Christmas Trees - Religious symbol or Pagan Pines?

Some athiests think the Christmas tree is a religious symbol and want it out of public schools and public offices.

Some Christians think it's pagan symbol and don't want it anywhere near their church.

Read Here.

So, who's right?

I think its open to interpretation any way you want.

Given that Martin Luther (as in Lutheranism, not the civil rights leader) is supposed to have come up with the idea of a Christmas tree, I suppose you could call it a "religious" symbol if you wanted to. Or you could look at it as being a symbol of nature worship (e.g. Druids) and therefore a pagan symbol.

Personally, I just look at it as being part of the Christmas tradition, just like Santa Claus and all the other stuff associated with Christmas.

people who get their panties in a bunch over such things really need to get a fscking life.

Christmas trees are as religious as the Easter Bunny and Santa Clause. Christmas trees have NOTHING to do with religion (well except for the name, but that's retarded). I CAN see why Christians dislike Christmas trees as it has NOTHING to do with their religion. It takes away from their imaginary character Jesus and puts more emphasis on the imaginary character Santa Clause. Which is definitely not good in their book.

It is secular. People who belong to a faith determine what is "in" their faith, not people who are outside their faith, like athiest. Athiests defining Christianity is funny, almost ludricious...

Also, the Supreme Court has ruled on this in cases about Minoras and Nativity scenes on public grounds (court houses).

Well living in the middle of the Texas Panhandle also puts me in the bible belt, and I will say that the better part of the people here have a christmas tree and there are quite a few of the religious fanatics here and yes they have christmas trees.
I just wish all the religious fanatics around here would stop trying to get me to go to church with them, really tired of hearing about it.

The best thing I have found to do is look them in the eyes, and tell them with a straight face that I am an atheist, and turn around a walk away. That usually results in a bewildered look and then a string of mumbling about religion.*

*This is not a reference to my religious beliefs, just my feelings towards the religious fanatics.

Athiest here. A decorated tree is non-religious as far as I'm concerned. I have one in my house for tradition. Santa is fun and while he used to be religious, he is so commercialized and changed that I consider him non-religious. Thus there is nothing wrong with a winter celebration with gifts.

It's a tree, decorated with ornamentation. There's nothing about that that relates to Jesus Christ in any way. (I am not religious, btw)

I hate fvcking people who knit pick every holiday because it scares some fvcking religious Zealot....

Ok Then I have to add this both sides need to get a life then...because it is just a tree. If it bring you joy and happiness during xmas more power to you. If you don't like to advocate xmas by using a pine tree then don't.

I wish I had time to sit there and dream all that crap up.

You forgot the enviromentalists who say planting and cutting Chirstmas trees take the place of wild habitats, old-growth forests and screw up the biodiversity... 🙂

Whatever christmas trees started off as, they are now nothing more traditional decorations in our homes/offices/etc. My family places no spiritual significance in them, we just like to look at it and put our gifts under it. Nothing more.
