Christmas Time Flight Prices

I was doing some research for an asia trip during the last two weeks of December. I was expecting the typical hike for airfare during peak travel season. Maybe $2000 for airfare roundtrip from Chicago to Hong Kong.

But what I found was completely ridiculous! Prices are already $3800 for a non-stop flight from Chicago to Hong Kong! I've seen it go up during travel season but never anything like this!

weird, I can usually get prices from MSP to the EU for about 500 bucks round trip during xmas/new years.

Hong Kong is a little further though 🙂

It's already October. Snooze you lose bro.

Well it looks like only United Airlines flies direct from ORD - HKG, that's why it's such a high price. There are plenty of sub 2000 dollar fares for connecting flights, or book a cheap flight from ORD-LAX and then another from LAX-HKG and there are tons of options for 1500-2000.

Also, outside of the holidays, flight prices are usually at their lowest 21 days before the flight.

My Canada -> New Zealand flight came out to $2100 round-trip a few months back. A week later (or today) the cost went up to $3200. I guess it's all timing.

the only problem for me booking a non-direct flight is that I only plan to stay in HK for a week and without a direct flight, i literally lose a full day maybe even 2 days just on flying. Yeah I'm a complaining spoiled a-hole but hey gotta take advantage of time!

I just dumped $480 on American for ORD-SAN at xmas time. Even Southwest could only beat that price by $10.

A friend of mine gave me some SWUs that he wasn't going to use before they expired so at least I'm not going to be in shitty AA steerage.

A connecting flight only adds a couple of hours each direction. 4 hours does not equal a full day or even 2 days.

Flights are great right now, got non-stop roundtrip from LAX-Maui for ~$600 fees included for turkey day.

$75 each way non-stop LAX-Cabo for Halloween.
