Christmas Present suggestions, please....

Ok, here is the scenario. Me and 4 of my friends have this Christmas tradition that instead of us buying presents for each individual, we pool our money and buy something cool for the collective network system. One year we got a cd-burner. Another year a 100mbps Hub. Another year a 100mbps switch, etc.

Well, this year we are kinda stumped. Anyone have any suggestions. Currently we have a 100mb switched hub with an ISDN line. An older SCSI Plextor CD-Writer (I forget the speed, but it works just fine for us).

Each of us has our own computer to hook onto the network.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Probably looking in the $300-$400 range.

thanks

Hmmm, there really isn't too much beyond that. I don't know what else you'd need for a small network. I'm guessing this a LAN gaming network. What about building a small dedicated server? It wouldn't have to be much to start, and it'd be something that you could upgrade each Christmas. You could start with just a mid-size hard drive, cheap CPU and mobo, you could even use something with integrated video. Just add a NIC and CD-ROM and you've got a server.

Whoever gets stuck running the server would appreciate it, since he'd have some work offloaded from his machine.

Yeah, Bober, that's what I was thinking.

We have a couple of 200mhz systems sitting around that we could even use for now. We can get MS 2000 server for $40. 😉

Although, I don't know the details about running a dedicated UT server. The other games we play are Age of Empires and Rogue Spear. I don't suppose those support a dedicated server...

One of the guys suggested the firewall, too...

Go buy a couch or something. You don't need a network upgrade. Nice big TV would be good too. You all must be living in the same place to wire a Lan so maybe it's time to call it quits with the network and buy something else to spruce up the place.

Well, the details are that 3 of the other 4 are brothers. The eldest owns the house. The next eldest (my age) lives there, as well as his friend (no, none of them are gay, afaik. 😀). The youngest brother ia married, as am I, and we have places of our own.

They have a nice surround sound/Big screen/DVD/DSS system.

They've also been working on getting central air. That place gets a little toasty in the desert summers of Utah with half a dozen computers running. 😉

Shop around, & you should be able to build a nice dual PPro 200/Win2K server for that price range. That should make your gaming experience a lot nicer.

I know a guy here at work was offering stripped dualie PPro systems (came out of an office situation, they removed the HD's & CD-ROMs), with one CPU installed, along with 32 MB of RAM, video, NIC for $125. Add one more CPU, 128 MB of RAM, & a HD & CDROM, & you'd be in business.
