Hi, I was thinking of pulling a Christmas prank on my mom by giving her an acceptance form for some high level ivy league medical school with my name on it. (She thinks I?m a total loser for going into IT).

So it may be a long shot but does anyone have any acceptance letter scans out there so I may Photoshop the names and addresses?
 
you should inform your mom that you could make just as much as a doctor in the IT field and it will only take you 4 years and 20g to get that degree...rather than 8 years and 200g

hell some med schools will cost you close to a million
 
True on the expenses due to med school...but I certainly have not seen anything in the industry which would make me think that I would be making anywhere close to 100-120k. People are still begging for 30k...unless ya get some spineless consulting job.

I'm gonna try my best to get this scanner to work. I might have to wait until the roomie gets back to do this. I'm not the most technically inclined person, hence why I went into medicine.

Yeah that would be funny if my parents were normal but since they are asian their brains only comprehend a few terms: SATs, MCATs, medicine, money, nursing, pharmacy, PhD, money, success, wealth, equity, money, and well...more money.

Unfortunately by the time she had it explained to her what a porn movie was the humor would have died.

Possible, but certainly not the norm. The average doc in private practice makes upwards of 150k. Specialists often make twice that.

In NYC, there are plenty of dev jobs paying 100k. Everywhere else, the majority are probably in the 40-80 range.

I agree..."most" but from the people I have met and from what i have seen in the industry..."getting" a job is the 1st hurdle...and the 2nd is getting one that pays more than 40.... There are still a lot of unemployed IT people out there.

Heh. My wife (gf at the time) lived in a house with me and two of my friends. Before she moved in, we made up "sexual offender" sheets like you see posted in public places about ourselves and mailed them to her mom.

That didn't go over very well. 🙁

I am looking past Lev 1 helpdesk. I just don't think that the chances are good for an average IT worker to get up to that high of level of pay. You have to be elite in what you just specified, networking or security....neither of which I am nor anyone I have ever run into is "that" good at.

No killing involved here....although she may throw a lamp at me or something depending on if she can take a joke. You are correct that the guy saying you could make as much in IT as in medicine was prett far off base. But I've only been out of school for 3 years and I could easily find a development job paying 40k fairly quickly. Unfortunately, that would be a substantial pay cut for me.
