My father openly told me he bought my Canon A70 kit today on ebay and he needed my help with the checkout (lol) I saw the price was $369 or so I heard him tell my mom it has a memory card, tripod, etc. It would have been purchased between about 12:00 noon and 5:00pm eastern time today (11/30). So, now that he already told me what I'm getting for Xmas, I want to find out which item he bought. How would I find this?
***Update December 3rd***
It took us a couple days, but RossMAN and I found the item: Link to my A70 Kit - Xmas Gift. Tricks my dad used to block me from finding it: used a new/different Ebay ID. Has his URL History set to 0 days, and cleared out all of his temporary internet files / cookies. His fatal mistake: leaving autocomplete forms turned on. I went to ebay login screen and hit the down arrow to see if anything would populate, and sure enough, there was his "secret" ebay ID. Ross took his ebay ID and other clues and ran with it, finding the correct item!!
Here are some of our transcripts:
*redhot: "it looks like he used a different ebay userid to buy the camera..."
*Ross: "Exactly. Do you remember the CITY of where the seller was located or can you get access to his e-mail account?"
*redhot: "I may be able to, but not tonight."
*redhot: "Ross, I was on my dad's computer earlier today, and sure enough, there was a 2nd e-mail account in his outlook... I was in a rush because the garage opened (and scared me) when I was looking at it, but his e-mail is one of the following, and I ran out of how many times I can look up IDs on ebay, could you check a couple for me? =)
eegull@insightbb.com
eegill@insightbb.com
eegul@insightbb.com
I remember it had two e's and sounded like "eagle" (he loves eagles). Thanks Ross!"
*ross: I tried all 3 of those email addresses, none of those are valid. It has to be something else. Here's a suggestion, logon to his computer check his HISTORY ... or if you see the emails from eBay the auction # will be in the e-mail itself, just write down the auction #.
*redhot: He had no e-mails in any folder (inbox, trash, sent, etc) so he is covering his tracks well... if I check internet history you think the auction # might be in there somewhere?
*ross: yes that's what I suggested before, if he uses IE it should be very easy and quick to check his internet history. the URL should begin with cgi.ebay.com look for that. Also check last week's ebay history as well. Remember to look for cgi.ebay.com .... I'm beginning to think either he is VERY good at covering his tracks or he didn't use eBay to purchase the digicam.
*redhot: Yeah, he is pretty good at his tracks because I know for certain he used ebay to purchase it because I had to help him checkout!!! It was on ebay and he didn't know how to pay with a CC over ebay and needed my assistance. It was like $379 and some change and heard him talking about how he got me the camera with $1200 worth of extras (which he probably made a little higher to brag to my mom) so I'm going to try to find it today. It's probably one of the A70 kits with $980 extras (mem card, tripods, lenses, etc) but I'll find out for sure today and get back to you.
*ross: If he paid $980 for an A70 he got RAPED up and down unless he got a VERY nice camera case, a real tripod, 1GB CF, 8 AA 3200 mAH batteries. I really hope he didn't pay $980 for an A70 because if he did, well I won't say anymore other than he got RAPED hard core. An A70 goes for $250 ... you cannot tell me that accessories cost $730 ... he WAY OVER PAID. Trust me on this I know what I am talking about. I would REALLY like to see this auction if you can find it.
*redhot: No, no, I confused you.... He paid $370ish for a kit that is ADVERTISED as coming with $980 worth of extras, here is a URL of an example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2967872793&category=46315
*ross: Ah ok *sigh of relief* thank you and sorry I misunderstood. Ok much better.vSo what price can you guess the auction closed at? Also what zip code is your fathers shipping address, I migth be able to find it using that as well.
*ross: 1) Have you checked his browsers HISTORY yet? Remember to change this week, last week and 2 weeks ago ... it should be there. You are looking for ebay.com or cgi.ebay.com
2) I tried searching for completed Canon A70 auctions, guess what? NONE of them are over $599. Even the $599 digicams have no buyers, they all went unsold. No wonder considering the A70 can be purchased brand new for $250.
3) I think we're going about this the wrong way ... is it possible that he purchased a Canon A80, S400, G2, G3, or other model? Are you 100% without a doubt positive that it's an A70?
*redhotjrm: When I was sitting behind him helping him checkout, it was like $369 and some change was the final price, and I am 99% it was a Buy It Now because there is no way he would wait for an auction. It is being shipped to 41018 zip. I get off work in half an hour and I'll look in the history.
*ross: It must be one of these, please look at them all and let me know which one it is: (list of a bunch of A70 completed auction in the $360 - $380 range, none of them ending around the time my dad completed his purchase, sometime on Dec. 29th in the afternoon)
*redhotjrm: None of those, grr, I must be either missing some variable of this equation or one must be wrong. I'll have his computer to myself for about 10 minutes pretty soon so I'll be able to tear into it until I figure out what my xmas gift is.
*ross: LOL this is frustrating me big time as you it sounds like. Please remember to LOOK AT HIS HISTORY ... from today going back to 1, 2 and 3 weeks ago. IT WILL BE THERE!
*redhot: My dad is amazing me with covering this thing up. The internet URL cache is set to 0 days. I opened up his temporary internet folder and it was only stuff from this morning. However, he made a mistake which may help us get closer to item. He left autocomplete on, so I went to ebay on his computer, went to the username box, and hit the down arrow to see what was autosaved.
his ebay id: eagle4131
When I look it up, it has an auction from November 6. Ebay only lets you see things they are *currently* bidding on or selling, so that doesn't help. So when I did an advanced search for a70 kits I looked through a lot of them and none had my dad's ebay ID as the winner..... Which leads me to this conclusion: When ebay stores sell multiple items, there is a link in the auction that says "Purchases" and only the buyer and seller can see it. So if he bought a kit from one of the ebay stores, which he probably did, I won't be able to find anything until they give him positive feedback under his ebay ID =) Which hopefully will be anyday since he already paid them.
*ross: Is that it? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2968135779
*redhot: Ross, you must have found it my man.... it fits all the things =) my dad told my mom it has "$1200 worth of upgrades, a tripod and everything" and it's $339 + shipping which would be roughly $369, which the checkout was.
!!! We have found the missing christmas gift! You rock buddy, we should make a thread of our adventure !!!
