i have my hd280's and they are very nice. i cant hear anything with them on. lol someone was just at my door for 20min and throwing rocks at my window...heard nothing. i dont use an amp and these are very nice for music and gaming. probably would be better with an amp though.
'
IMO ....sennheiser is very good.

The impedance on the hd 580 is 300 which is high. the impedance on the senn px200 is 32. what this means is that you need a clean power source to drive the hd 580 for them to sound good. since the px200 are lower impedance you do not need as much power to drive, your sound card should be ok for them to sound great! your sound card just does not provide enough power to drive teh hd580's ok for px100 oor px200

Now, can you still use your hd 580 for gaming, sure. but why would you do that to your hd580's @ $150. the stock headphone cable is somewhat delicate so why risk the damage. They are great for listening to music!

buy an inexpensive pair and have fun gaming. I personally own the senn px200 and use them for gaming and ipod.

I can't seem to locate the px200's

Here you go:

Shop around ok

The PX100s look nice. Most reviewers give them high marks for comfort which is important for gaming. They also say the treble is fairly subdued, which makes it easy on the ears.

It says refurbed in retail box, not a good idea or doesnt it matter?

Nice phones, but you need an amp to get decent sound out of them, as I understand it. Also, they're open phones (less isolation).

they may benefit from an amp but even without one they still sound better than any other headphone i've ever heard. you just can't get much volume out of a portable CD player (still loud enough for comfortable listening). my laptop's headphone output drives them loud enough, though.

the problem is just that they are so sensitive that they reveal the limitations of their source. so when you strap them on, you'll hear all kinds of hiss and hum and distortion that other headphones weren't capable of revealing, both from your reproduction equipment and the original recordings. but even then, and even without an amp, the 580's are MUCH better sounding than the 280's, for instance, which in turn are better than, say, Sony V6's.

they block no sound from outside and block none of their own sound so they can disturb others in the room. so if you're looking for something "noise cancelling" i think your best bet would actually be the 280's, which block more than 30 db, if i remember correctly. that's like putting in foam earplugs.

I ordered this. I needed more comfortable phones than the stock iPod plugs and PX100 looks like good fit. Price wasn't bad either.

Headphone amps are overrated. Most likely a headphone out from an ordinary stereo amp or surround receiver will provide more than enough quality to a pair of HD580.

Well after researching a lot, I think I am going with the Sennheiser HD-555's. They are cheap enough to get into the field, but still have great sound from what I hear. Thanks for all of the help.

i have mdr v7000djs .. flashy $150 things frequently seen in music videos / dj clue whatever. one thing you wouldnt know about these without owning them is that they crush your ears /skull from the pressure after about 60 mins. the sound quality is great, naturally.

my recommendation: $12 KOSS black headphones.. seriously the best POS headphones you can buy

Grado or Sony.... I've had all 3 brands and Sennheiser is not as good as either of the other 2 IMO.

I love my current Sony's.. they sound amazing for the $ IMO.

I highly disagree. I tried out some SR125s and some Senn HD650s on the Grado headphone amp the other day and was blown away by how much better they sounded from the amp than from the CD player we had setup (it was at an audio store so we could to back-to-back testing). The amp added so much warmth to the sound it was incredible, just a completely different experience. Not a $350 experience, perhaps (the price of the amp), but a great experience nonetheless.

To the OP, I highly recommend either the Grado SR80s or Allesandro MS1s for that price (SR80s ~$90, MS1s ~$100). They're actually quite similar and I haven't personally used the MS1s but I've heard they are much like the $150 Grado SR125s which I have heard, and know are quite good.

I've done my share of mixing and matching with headphones stuff.

Headphones bought and sold:beyer dt770, dt880, grado sr-225, Audio technica A500, W1000, Sennheiser HD600, Sennheiser HD580.

Amsp built and sold: Cmoy, Meta, Pimeta

Headphone out used: Pioneer cheapo Receiver, Denon AVR-1603, Pioneer Elite A-35R <---still using.

For low impedance cans like grado and audio technica, they might be sensitive to the output impedance, but my cmoy ($40 hack job) made the sr225 sang.

High impedance cans like DT880, HD580/600, My Pioneer Elite A-35R ($120 used) killed the meta (bought at $160), Pimeta ($90 hack job) in turns of any sound attribute.

As long as you have a good source, amp doesn't really do much. If you use a computer as source, save some money for a E-mu 0404 or 1212m, because they will give you an improvement which an amp can never achieve.

I'll put in another word for the Senn 280's. I have a pair of 590's that I use for music @ work that are definately better, but for a good set of closed phones that wont break your budget, the 280's are perfect. Just be careful. Audiophile listening is addictive and will find new ways to break your budget 🙂

The Audigy card will push the 280's just fine.
