I am in need of some headphones to put on my christmas list. Im gandering at the Sennheisers now. I usually hear only good things from them but they are a little pricey. What would you guys recommend? I game 90% of the time and I use the Gigaworks S750's so I want something that can sound just as great, from a headphone standpoint. I am open to any other brand too. I looked at some 5.1 headphones that seem decent, I was looking at the speedlink medusa's I think.

Summary:
Wants:
Good Directional Sound for gaming
Noise cancelling
Comfort
Decent Bass if possible
Microphone is optional
and hopefully keep a price close to around $100, can be more though

I have Senn 280s and the 7.1 GW system, phones are much more enjoyable to listen to. They're closed & circumaural, so do a good job of attenuating outside noise. Direction is good in games, no mic though. They do fit a bit snugly. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. Oh, and I wouldn't wish Sony products/services/customer service on my worst enemy.

Bose TriPort or Grado Labs blows them away. If you want noise cancellation go with and I promise you will love them- Bose Quiet Comfort.

The Bose TriPort's are nice. Any Bose store has them on demo. Personally I've been using Sony MDR-V600's for years (7+). They have been very good and I think you can pick them up for about $80 now.

 Text ... Might also want to check out Head-Fi, you'll see a lot of "listen if you can, your own ears are the best judge" rhetoric, but you'll also get an idea of what's good and what isn't, and what might be more to your liking and what won't... here's their opinion on the triports ;)

It says refurbed in retail box, not a good idea or doesnt it matter?

Nice phones, but you need an amp to get decent sound out of them, as I understand it. Also, they're open phones (less isolation).

Yea thats what I understand, I just trying to find out if my ZS plat. pro. is good enough. The amps seem ricidulously expensive.

Read your links. I never had any idea anyone was so hostile towards Bose. But then, I'm not an audiophile. ;) It?s good to learn.

The Senheiser HD 595 are a better choice if you don't want an AMP. If you want to save some monet the HD 555 are almost the same not big difference. The HD 595 sound amazing from my Audigy 2(no AMP),

BTW obviously they will sound better with an amp but unlike the 580 they sound good withoput it too.

PS Like a another poster said check out head-fi.org, they know everything there (well about headphones anyway:). If you buy BOSE ill slap you :)

I have the Senn 580. They are good cans but pretty pricey. They sound decent without amp but sound much much beter with a good amp. They are open and very comfy to wear.

I also have the Grado SR80. For the money, i think they are the best bang for the buck cans. They sound very good. Even without an amp, they still sound pretty good. My complaints with grado are as follows:
1) They get uncomfy after extended use.
2) The foam (muss that go over the ears) start to get brittle and start to fall apart eventually. The replacement foam pads are cheap, but it is an extra hassle.

I've had 'professional' denon cans that i also use, they are also decent, but i'd stick with the grado.

I'll be buying a Senn 600 this weekend (only reason is because my fiend is selling his for cheap because he bought a Senn 650).

Why?

The V6 is better. The V600 is newer, but not as good as the older V6.

I have the V6 but haven't tried the V600. Most people say the V600 is no good. The V6 blocks out most sounds and the sound is very nice. I also used them as earmuffs last year.. :)

You sound card or any portable device will not be adequate. You will need a dedicated headphone amp to power this headphone to its potential.

Do a search on "headphones" in this forum. I found a few threads that helped me find my set of pro cans. I got the Sennheiser HD595 with the a headphone amp from headphone.com.

These are all fairly cheap, and I've used them

The Grados are great for rock, but leak like crazy, so other people might complain.
The Sony's are good for electronic music, video games to some extent (some people complain about the soundstage)
The Sennheisers are ok, and I use them at work since they block out even more noise than the V6s. They're not great if you wear glasses, though.

You have good tastes since you are looking at Senn 580's I own Senn 600's and would not use them for gaming. Senn 580 and 600's need a lot of juice to sound good. I own a pair of SENN PX100 and PX200 that are great for gaming. They are foldable, light, low impedance (dont need amp to drive) and under $100. You get both of them for under $100, px100 is open and px200 is closed. I found them on ecost at a great price last year.

Well I found the 580s for around $150, the only thing is that the amp costs just the same. I dont know what to do. Also, why wouldnt you use them for gaming? Does it sound bad?

$150 is a good price. The impedance on the hd 580 is 300 which is high. the impedance on the senn px200 is 32. what this means is that you need a clean power source to drive the hd 580 for them to sound good. since the px200 are lower impedance you do not need as much power to drive, your sound card should be ok for them to sound great! your sound card just does not provide enough power to drive teh hd580's ok for px100 oor px200

Now, can you still use your hd 580 for gaming, sure. but why would you do that to your hd580's @ $150. the stock headphone cable is somewhat delicate so why risk the damage. They are great for listening to music!

buy an inexpensive pair and have fun gaming. I personally own the senn px200 and use them for gaming and ipod.
