Christmas has become superficial glitter

lol... well I don't know about Catholic Christmas, but I thought that was the whole point of American Christmas?

Can't wait for Fox News to brand him as a communist/Marxist!!!

And all along I thought Christmas was about making young boys feel happy.

sounds about right. in most cases, Christmas is just an orgy of capitalism.

I mean it when I tell my family/friends that I don't want anything. donate the money to a local charity. or, hell... instead of spending 3 hours of your wages on me, spend 3 hours volunteering somewhere.

I think next year, I'm not going to do gifts for anyone except my nieces. I've just been feeling really disgusted by the whole process this year. I think I'm just going to make donations to charities in people's names and let them whine that they didn't get some shitty movie on bluray.

Christmas has become the "Great Merchant Holiday."

Every year, it's less and less about "The birth of Christ" and more and more about "Buy, Buy, BUY!"

To me, it's funny as hell to see so many "Religion is phony," "I worship the Great Flying Spaghetti Monster," "I'm an atheist" people talking about what they're getting/doing for Christmas.
If you don't believe in Christ...you shouldn't be celebrating Christmas.

It was the second time in as many days that Benedict has pointed to the need to rediscover faith to confront the problems facing the world today.

Yeah, because when everyone obeyed the Catholic Church a few centuries ago, the world was a much better place. 🙄

And a happy solstice/Yule to you too. 😛

Yeah, why the fuck does the protector of pedofiles whine about a pagan party?

Nothing about Yule is christian...even if the christians would like to cling on to that lie...

ignoring any beef you may have with the Catholic church or the Pope, would using a holiday to think about the problems facing the world rather than just buying shit really be such a made thing?

I am enjoying the holiday season, lots of cooking, dining with my family, watching movies, laughing, talking & yes the giving of gifts. I've also enjoyed trying to give a bit to others.

Why can't we do both giving and gifting?

So you think we should use a holiday for this...instead of every day?

Empty words...just like "christmas"...

Pedo files? Are those for toenails? (or would that be poda files? 😛)
(otherwise, I don't "protect pedophiles" in any way.)

While I tend to agree that Christmas time isn't really "The birthday of Christ," but rather a season that was taken by the early Christians because of the Festivus celebration, Christmas as celebrated IS about Christ...or it's SUPPOSED to be, anyway.
If you don't celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ, stop celebrating CHRISTMAS and start wishing everyone a "Happy YuleTide," or "Merry Festivus," or make up your own holiday name.
"Ramen to you all."

Or...<gasp> Happy Holidays.

My sentiments exactly.

Because believers of Christ know the day not as "Christmas" but by what occurred on "Christmas" over 2000 years ago: the birth of Jesus, the Christ, who had come to bear the sins of the world, reconcile the relationship between Man and God, and teach us how to live as God intended.

We don't celebrate "christmas" (Krist messe) in Scandinavian....we celebrate Jul(Yule)...you fail 😀

you can take anything and make your own religion out of it however you desire. Everyone can celebrate on Dec 25 however they see fit. hence the spelling of Xmas and not christmas.
I celebrate Xmas in modern american tradition. i don't observe Christmas however.

You obviously don't understand what "Xmas" means...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas

"Xmas" is a common abbreviation of the word "Christmas". It is sometimes pronounced /ˈɛksməs/, but it, and variants such as "Xtemass", originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation /ˈkrɪsməs/. The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for "Mass",[1] while the "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, translated as "Christ".[2]

There is a common misconception that the word Xmas is a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas[3] by taking the "Christ" out of "Christmas".

Not really.
In he cuntries that Winder solstice (Yule) was originally celebrated didn't have of the faking of history and dosn't use the false name of "christmas".

Norway = Jul
Sweden = Jul
Denmark = Jul
Finish = Joulu
Iceland = Jól
Faroe Islands = Jól
Germany = Weihnachten

No christ...just the old pagan names...

Care to comment on Yule..that has lying been relabed "christmas"? 🙂

This might help you:

Now remove that...and lets se how much "christ" there is left in what you falsly call "christmas"?!

I don't "falsely" call it Christmas. It IS Christmas...regardless of the true origins of the holiday.That was done long before I came along. You'll notice that in my first post in this thread, I acknowledged that this season has been co-opted by the early Christians...

THAT isn't my point...if you don't believe in Christ...don't celebrate "Christmas." Don't give "Christmas gifts," don't wish people "Merry Christmas," don't go to "Christmas parties," and don't put up a "Christmas tree."
Feel free to celebrate the Yule...put up a Yule log, give Yule gifts, and go to Yule parties...after all, this time of year isn't ONLY for Christmas...among many other holidays, it's also the time of Hanukkah. I'm not Jewish, so I don't celebrate that one, but don't begrudge the Jews for having "their special holiday" at the same time...(especially since theirs probably came first) Neither do I celebrate "Kwanzaa" since I'm not African...but I don't care that Kwanzaa is celebrated at this time of year.

I'm not a religious person, but I agree with the pope. Making gift giving feel compulsory is ruining what it means to be thankful for what you have and the dare I say, "Spirit" of Christmas.

I am fine by you celebrating "christmas".

Just don't use the pagans customs.
That is against your bible-thingy.

So you go to chruch and praise a copy of the egyptian "horus".

But don't do pagan customs...or lie them "christian".

That is called dishonesty...but then again...your religions is full of lies so it really dosn't suprise me....
