Christmas 2011: The season of the $199 7" Android Tablet?

I know that I already said this last year, but I think that the hot item for THIS Christmas season will be the $199 7 inch Android tablet.

I'm betting that there are millions of parents out there who's kids have been begging and pleading for an iPad all year long, but most of those parents aren't willing to spend $599 (plus a cellular data plan!) on their kids for a Christmas gift. Those parents will be looking for a cheaper option, and I'll bet that many of them will be picking up an Android tablet instead.

Pickings were slim for sub $200 Android tablets last year, but this year we have both the Amazon Kindle Fire and a TON of Taiwanese manufacturers (like Archos) with excess Android tablet inventory that they're trying to unload. Hell... even the major tablet manufacturers like Samsung probably have a bunch of inventory that they'll want to unload by the end of the year as well. My hunch is that the big box retailers like Walmart and Target will be purchasing these by the truckload, and will have pallets of them in the aisles, ready be snatched up for $149 on Black Friday.

None of these companies will be happy with their profit margins on these purchases, but having a few million additional Android tablets out there in 2012 should help to spur interest in application development.

So, who thinks that I'm wrong?

hell the acer a500 is on ebay for $259 already refurb. cheap sub $200 tablets will be hot for xmas i'm sure.

and i STILL think a tablet is a toy. but people give toys at xmas.

Archos has had 7 inch tablets for a while, and most of them stink.
But the Samsungs and others are looking darn good. I pre-ordered the Fire because it seems to fit the bill nicely.

I'm tempted to pre-order the fire. I got the TouchPad firesale, but I almost feel I'll get a stable build of CM7/9 on the Fire before the TouchPad. Just hope it's flashable.

Any news on the Nook Color 2? Reports from last month said it would be out by now.

Another reason why this might be a good year for tablets, is the hard drive shortage may mean less PCs and laptops for sale, or at higher prices.

LOL, Android users, giant phones, and tiny tablets 🙂

(I have a nook color and a Fire pre-ordered and want a Samsung Note if they release one with Verizon's brand of LTE)

I don't see why not. That said, I think the iPad will sell despite its price. It was the first of its kind to market, and is now the "pop culture" tablet just like the iPhone is the pop culture smartphone.

Once ICS is open sourced and ported, there are going to be a lot of $100-150 Android Touchpads out there 🙂

Assuming ICS does not need a top of the line SoC to run smooth. Most of those cheap tablets are not going to have a top of the line SoC. If you are talking the touchpad no guarantee it will run well.

I don't have a tab now but when/if the Sammy 7.7 makes it here I think it will be my first. I have no interest in the iPad or iPad sized tabs but 7.7 with 1280x800 sounds good to me. The Sammy 7.7 is scheduled to get ICS "sometime" soon.

Kindle fire or Nookcolor or HP Touchpad if you can find one at $200. Most good tablets are still >$300 atm which stinks. Other than I'm just going to get a big display smartphone rather than waiting for them to come down in price.

er uh kindle fire will be out in a few days, so i think this will be the thanksgiving of the $199 7" tablet.

all tablets are $199 devices. they arent selling because they arent worth $400. just wait and even 10 will have to be $199

Not only that, the person who recieves the gift is not saying "cheapass" more or less. Its like buying for you wife a cheap ring vs a more expensive one where they think you love them more if you sacrifice like a dumbass

You mean the 7 inch Amazon Tablet.

No-one is going to buy that tablet with the impression that it's an Android Tablet. No-one.

Wow, someone should tell the millions of tablet owners their OS is Android, they'd been duped!. Fire will run a modded version of 2.2 but it's target market will be media consumption and as long as it works well it should be a huge seller. IMO I can't see paying $500 for any tablet, at that price your into lower-end notebooks price range so what's the point?, a tablet should be cheap and very portable and Fire is those plus backed by media and shopping giant Amazon..

I'm talking about the general public, of course geeks like you are gonna want to hack Android on it; but the vast majority of people just see it as an Amazon Tablet, they don't know it's based off of Android and how would they?

Hmm, it's definitely not IOS, not MS, I don't see Amazon claiming to roll out an entirely new OS for their tablet, what could it be??
