Chris Matthews: Obama’s Critics Are Driven By Racism

MSNBC's Chris Matthews unleashed a scathing attack Wednesday against critics of President Barack Obama, arguing that efforts to repeal the new federal health care law and calls for impeachment are driven by racism.

On location at the event marking the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, the fiery pundit said that, unlike many conservatives who demanded Obama's birth certificate, racists in previous eras were up front about their prejudice.

"At least they were honest back then," Matthews said. "Today in American politics you have people like Donald Trump who hangs around with Mitt Romney, talking about the president being an illegal immigrant, basically being a con artist on a street corner. You've got people talking about nullification of the law of the land. You got people talking about impeachment like [Tom] Coburn. You've got Ted Cruz out there. They never say their problem with Obama is that he's black. But look at the pattern. The pattern is rejection of his legitimacy at the first point, saying he's not really here legally. It's rejection of the law he passed, the landmark bill passed in 2010. It's an attempt to impeach him on no grounds."

Hey Chris, you're way off base here. There are people being honest today, and they don't want him impeached...

A town official in Maine was visited by the Secret Service Tuesday after posting a message to Facebook referring to President Barack Obama with a racial slur and calling for him to be shot, the Portland Press Herald reported.

David Marsters, a retired Massachusetts police officer and a candidate for selectman in Sabattus, Maine, posted a photo of Obama along with a link to a story about a Republican push to impeach the president at 8:17 p.m. Friday, writing "Shoot the N*****" above it, according to the newspaper.

Marsters told the Press Herald that after his Facebook post was flagged to local law enforcement by other residents, he was visited by both the Secret Service and the CIA. He said he told the Secret Service agents who questioned him that he didn't intend to threaten the president.

Marsters told the Press Herald in a telephone interview that his post was taken out of context.

"I think it's a lot of hogwash," he said. "I did not threaten the president. ... I might have used the wrong words. ... I didn't say I was going to do it."

"What I really meant to say is, 'When are we going to get rid of this (expletive),'" Marsters added. "I should have said, 'I hope the bastard dies.'"

matthews is way off. While i have no doubt some idiots who opposing Obama are doing it because they do not want a black man in charge.

To make a blanket statement like he did though is ignorant. it makes him and those with him look idiotic.

What blanket statement? He was being very specific.

One of those specific's being Coburn's impeachment comments. Which just happened to show up in that second article.

The entire MSNBC ratings system is based on convincing people Republicans and conservatives are motivated by a strong desire to take away rights of women and African Americans. Just watch any nightly commentator, it's far and away the most common theme of the network.

Chris Matthews makes these comments, so... what exactly is new about this?

I watched Matthews every evening in the run up to the 2008 elections until I couldn't stand his extreme progressive bias anymore. The man is a head case. He says virtually everything that comes into his brain with no filter.

He was the reason I quit watching MSNBC altogether.

Of course they're driven by racism, but that doesn't mean they understand it, or are willing to engage in the sort of self examination that would reveal it. Quite the contrary. They're incapable of challenging their own system of belief. They don't want to be racist, yet they are at some very deep level. They Deny.

The unthinkable has happened- there's a black man in the oval office. It turns their view of the world upside down. Many never even imagined it could actually happen, being so far out of their conceptual framework as to just be wrong at a very visceral level.

The weirdest part of it all is that, at a cultural level, Obama isn't black at all. He is very much a product of his upbringing, as are we all, and that was largely accomplished by his affluent white grandparents. Only the color of his skin is different.

So let's clarify something. Precisely who is Matthews talking about? A critic that he cites or all critics?

His words are posted above. He's talking about certain people. If he meant it to apply to all critics, he likely would have said as much.

I read his words in the first section and then there is a link to someone in Maine.

Maybe I missed the qualifier in the first part.

Ok I listened to his clip. There are crazy people who want Obama gone. It's reasonable to assume that some are racist. I personally know people who really really don't like him at all. They make me look like his publicist. Racist? Not a chance.

Matthews is taking a broad brush here and using it to paint those who oppose Obama as racist. I oppose Obama. I don't care if he's blue and dances on a pogo stick.

Much of the talk that Matthews describes like impeachment is indeed nonsense. Unfortunately he then goes on to create his own.

It is not racist to oppose Obama or his policies, although some would seem to argue or imply otherwise.

Well notice trump nor Mittens were elected president in the end. So who cares about either one of "them"?

It's no longer election season.
So naturally most news media has a hard time with ratings.
Faux news is still harping on Bengazi or what ever the hell it's called. Most sane people have moved on.

Besides everyone knows that masterbating and too much news network makes one go blind, after first going postal. Then the desire for sex change reassignment.

But that's not the end. There are the racists who oppose how the NSA is being used. There there are the racists who are concerned about Syria. Racists everywhere.

I didn't feel "a thrill going up my leg listening to Obama"

I must be a racist according to Chris Matthews.

You quite watching MSNBC because Rachels Maddow posted low rattings?

let’s face it many people simply don’t have the attention span to listen to an op-ed opinion show like hers. The fact that she is smart woman, an Oxford educated PhD scares and threatens many, especially the anti-intellectuals. Sometimes when i watch her if it’s a topic I don’t care about I tune out but for ones I do the information is presented in depth.

I don’t watch any other MSNBC commentators. Mathews yells too much, sharpton cant articulate well and drives me nuts listing to him, maybe over time with more practice, but I still don’t like his past press mongering. But I do miss Keith.

I am absolutely shocked, shocked I tell you that a left wing hack would continue to push the idea that anyone opposed to the idiotic policies pushed by obummer must be a racist.

Just the usual Matthews BS.

And conservatives didn't like Bill Clinton as president because he is white. Conservatives are racists against everyone I guess.

So are we to believe that Republicans never criticized Clinton? And would never have tried to impeach him, because after all he was white?

I don't like being spied on wholesale. I spoke out about it with Bush and Obama has expanded the program. Am I a racist?

I don't believe that the Federal Government has the right to summarily execute American citizens absent exigent circumstances. Am I a racist?

Reducto ad racism is no way to run a government.

So are we to believe that Republicans never criticized Clinton? And would never have tried to impeach him, because after all he was white?

Remember, Clinton was the first black president.
