CHP announces crack down on distracted drivers

About fucking time! 😡 I see these fucks every single day, looking down at their idiotic cell phone, not paying attention to the road ahead of them. I propose legislation where the CHP carries cell phone crushers in their cars and just confiscate the devices and destroy them on the spot.

Issue 46, Volume 15.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY - The San Diego County California Highway Patrol offices have announced they will conduct a "crack down" on distracted drivers this weekend, Friday, November 18 through Sunday, November 20.
Officers ask the public, "When was the last time you drove somewhere without using your cell phone?"

"Driving without checking your email, sending a text message, or talking on the phone is becoming a thing of the past," they said. "But think about it, you are putting yourself and others at risk. Is that text or phone call worth a human life?

Officers said distracted driving has become just as dangerous as drinking and driving.

"Whether you are using your hand-held cellular device or doing your makeup, you are more likely to be involved in a collision than the regular driver," they said. "Drivers that use hand-held devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves or others.

Studies also show that texting while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time just as much as having a blood alcohol content of a legally drunk driver."

During the special crack down effort, officers will be putting extra focus on those violating the cell phone and text messaging laws and driving while distracted.

Although the laws have been in place since 2008, many drivers often have questions about what is legal and what is not legal. The most commonly asked questions are answered below.

Q: Does the "hands-free" law prohibit you from dialing a wireless telephone while driving or just talking on it?

A: The law does not prohibit dialing, but drivers are strongly urged not to dial while driving.

Q: Is it legal to use a Blue Tooth or other earpiece?

A: Yes, however you cannot have both ears covered.

Q: Does the hands-free law allow you to use the speaker phone function of your wireless telephone while driving?

A: Yes, as long as you are not holding the phone.

Q: Drivers under 18: Am I allowed to use my wireless telephone hands free?

A: No. Drivers under the age of 18 may not use a wireless telephone, pager, laptop or any other electronic communication or mobile services device to speak or text while driving in any manner, even hands free.
Exception: Permitted in emergency situations to call police, fire or medical authorities. (VC §23124).

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If you are looking at people not paying attention to the road ahead of them, clearly you are not paying attention to the road yourself.

Every day I drive to work via 280 that has a long steep downhill section around Hwy 92 offramp. Every day there's a cruiser or a motorcycle sitting on an offramp from a closed road (they stop on a freeway shoulder, then back up on it) invisible to motorists just cruising down the hill.

Every single fucking day they nab someone for letting their car accelerate down the hill. You want to tell me they are cracking down on motorists for my safety? Bullshit. They are out for money, and this is their favorite collection spot. Fuck them. If cellphone fines were peanuts, like a fix-it ticket, not one of them would care.

While there's legitimate concern, I guarantee, they are out for money.

While I don't disagree with you Paulney, I have to say that I applaud their efforts on this one. Far too often am I seeing someone drifting about into someone else's lane. Every single time I pass that person, I look over and they are pressing buttons on their phone. Distracted driving is idiotic and dangerous. Speeding (within reason) is far less of a problem than idiots doing idiotic things while they should be driving.

Speeding is speeding. Is it somehow justified because you're going down a grade? Of course cops are out for money; what other reason do people have to slow down.....

EDIT: Not claiming I don't speed. Just stating the facts.

Try checking out the situation with Utah's highways and speed limits. Might blow your mind.

The texting & emailing while driving is absurd but I continue to argue voice calls should not be banned.

If you can eat a Big Mac with your lap dog hanging its head out the drivers side window while on sitting your lap and a 18-month old in the back seat screaming and you can change CD's all while driving is perfectly legal - then how is having a voice call considered illegal?

Stupid Govt and there nanny laws to gin up revenue.

I wish some people would just learn already. I almost got hit by some douche yesterday yapping away on his phone. When I honked my horn because I had no where to go to avoid it, he turns, gives me the bird and goes back to his lane. I really felt like ramming said douche off the road.

My little brother had 2 kids die his senior year who were texting and driving and than the year after another kid dies doing the same thing.

I know that spot, and you're right, it is a money grab. I don't drive it every day, but when I do, I always make sure I'm going 65 even if it requires me to hit the brakes going downhill.

Hands free, yes, but having to look down at your phone to answer it? Come on now. That phone call can wait until you've exited or pulled over. It's that split second you take your eye off the road where anything can happen. Driving is one activity EVERYONE should be doing without distractions. No makeup, no phones, leave the radio station as it is etc, etc. If everyone paid more attention to the road, our highways and roadways would be so much safer and more pleasant to drive through. If you want to do all of that shit in a car, then hire a taxi or limo.

If you are looking at people not paying attention to the road ahead of them, clearly you are not paying attention to the road yourself.

Wrong, I'm on my motorcycle and can tell a distracted driver as I ride past them. Saw one this morning, guy driving a black 650i, big gap between him and the car in front, he's looking down, not paying attention to the road. I also can see in the mirrors as I come up behind a car and see the driver's eyes. Weaving back and forth, in and out of their lane is another dead giveaway.

that's pure hypocrisy.

Good. Saw a guy the other week using a tablet while driving. It was so obvious cause you can see him holding it on top of his steering wheel.
