Sometimes when I barf, it looks like chowder. Hence, it's not something I'll eat.

How about both? I don't prefer one over the other, yet I still like chow-dah!

EDIT: Thanks, it looks like I am one of 2 people so far that don't discriminate their chowder intake based on color.

Manhattan seems to be just flavored tomato/vegatable soup.

I have ordered and also gotten a broth with some clams in it.
Only NE can be considered clam chowder. But do not call potata soup with clams a clam chowder.

Best New England Clam Chowder I ever ate, wasnt even close to being made there. Last year I flew out to Seattle Washington. A little place down by the Bainbridge Island Ferry, on the waterfront in an open aired market makes the best damned New England Clam Chowder I ever tasted, and they serve it in a bowl made of sour dough bread....absolutely awesome. If any Seattleonians know the name of this place, I'd appreciate it, as it was a quick stopover and I never did get the name. They serve great coffee there as well(big surprise in seattle, I know.)

man, i live in NYC, and i HATE the fact that restaurants only serve Manhattan clam chowder. And my friends in Massachusetts say that restaurants there ONLY serve New England. They tell me it's almost illegal to serve Manhattan clam chowder in Massachusetts, which i totally understand. I think it's a bit of a war going on between the two factions.

Best New England clam chowder I'ver ever had was at a little costal village called Glouchester, situated 20 miles outside Boston. The lobsters and clams were all caught the same day... mmmm... I'm getting hungry just thinking of it!

Manhattan all the way! The New England stuff is too creamy for me and makes nauseous. Bleh.
