Choosing HD/DVR service...Comcast or DirecTV?

Well, I finally have a HD set, and I've been enjoying SDTV on it via DirecTV that I have had for two years or so now. However, I want to finally get on the HD/DVR bandwagon. I've been researching for a bit now, and the general consensus I came up with was that the HD quality is the best with cable, but the HD/DVR boxes are generally better through DTV.

Also, I've read a lot about the satellite vendors sending all the HD out compressed, while the cable companies do not. Now, I called and spoke to both Comcast, who is taking Adelphia over in my town, as well as DTV retentions and they both gave me good deals. Comcast will be cheaper by a bit becaue I will no longer pay a premium for just having them for internet.

Now, when I spoke to the DTV retention lady, she mentioned that their MPEG4 rollout was complete, and that they have some deals in place where they plan to have over 100 HD channels within the next couple years. That last claim seems overly optimistic to me. I've also started seeing these DTV commercials with Jessica Simpson claiming all their HD content is broadcast in 1080i, but I think they may just be referring to HD movies on PPV.

I've also heard that Comcast's DVR boxes are a bit buggy, and I imagine you can't do any HD upgrades on them because Comcast owns them right? Right now, I'm leaning toward Comcast because if I get them and don't like them, I can always dump them and go back to DTV, but if I stay with DTV, I'm stuck on a 2 year contract. My one worry is the SDTV quality with Comcast. It sucked when it was Adelphia, and most of the stations were not digital, while all my stations with DTV now are nice, clean digital...which I assume is why SDTV looks so good on my new TV even when stretched to fill the screen. Another plus for Comcast though is I'd get all my Bruin's home games in HD...so I can see them lose even clearer! :p

So, Comcast or DTV?

I have it, and there's not a thing that I don't really like about it. Maybe that the menus are 4:3 overlayed, but it will upconvert all SD content if you want it to.

Also, there are always at least 100 free movies On Demand, with like 20 of those being in HD.

Ahhh...sounds nice. How about lock-ups? I hear their boxes tend to lock up randomly...

Also, what the capacity on their DVR box?

I've paid no more than $39 a month for top tier HSI and an HD-DVR. I have a semi-annual call to the Comcast retentions department.

I have 2 comcast HD DVR's and I love 'em :)

Switched from DirecTv w/TiVo back when their HD DVR was $1000.00

I've never had my Comcast HD box lock up in the ~1 year I've had it. :)

Once in a while (once a week, tops) it will freeze for like 10 seconds and then catch up. It's really a non issue.

I'm pretty sure it's a 160GB drive in it, which is really more than enough. If you want to keep more than that, use the FireWire port on the back to take it off.

If I am going to stay with satellite, I'll stick with DTV because I have had not one single complaint over the 2+ years I have had it. I'm sure dish is fine, but I'm not going to bother switching if I stay satellite...

Nice! So, you can take what you record off the DVR and upload it to a PC?

Actually, with the $25 off a month I get for 16 months for being a DTV changeover, it's under $100 for both HSI and HD/DVR...

I was a DTV customer for 5 years, up until about 3 weeks ago. The reason I switched to Dish was simply because of DTV's lack of HD programming. My bill remained the same, but now I get more SD channels and 25+ HDTV channels, compared to the 8 (?) DTV has available.

I loved the service while I had it, and will gladly switch when they catch up to Dish's lineup. I even went with a no-contract plan with Dish in case I randomly want to switch back, but as of now I don't regret my decision.

Ok, they do have more channels...but what are they? I don't get any of the premium channels like HBO, Showtime, etc, so if it's just more of those, it's irrelevant to me.

Also, doesn't dish do the same compression that DTV does?

Edit:

Just looked it over and they do have more channels, and some look interesting, but their top package is $100/mo by itself?!

Dish has significantly more bandwidth available so they don't compress nearly as much as DTV does (if at all). That $100 package includes unlimited HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz.

O crap, I thought that DirectTV was Dish... take one from the Direct and send it results. And I have a Dish network HD-PVR, not from Dish Network but Bell ExpressVu. Movie networks look great in HD :D EDITED FOR SPELLING!

What about the DTV MPEG4 rollout that is now in place? Also, how does Dish have more bandwidth? I would think with DirecTV being the larger of the two satellite providers, they would have more satellites and/or bw...or am I missing something?

Added Dish to the poll...

Dish is also rolling out MPEG4. They gave excellent deals to people with the MPEG2 HD DVR to upgrade to the new one. I honestly have no idea how they have more bandwidth, but I know that DirecTV is struggling and has to turn off some HD channels such as TNT on Sundays so that they can broadcast Sunday Ticket in HD. I've found http://dbstalk.com to be an excellent resource.

MPEG4 might be a great thing, but it's just another recompression and introduces even more artifacts.
