Choosing an LCD monitor

I want to retire my 19" CTX Ultra Screen which I got for $200 2 years ago. It's a great monitor, but it's definately time to go LCD.

I've done some research to familiarize myself with quality stats... contrast ratio, response time, price, etc.

As far as price range and quality I'm looking at 17" LCD's (although 19" would be nice) I noticed that 17" have predominantly much better refresh times.

I'm currently looking at a deal for a Dell UltraSharp 1703FP 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor w/ DVI that comes to $409. 600:1 contrast ratio, 16ms response time, and i think 170 degree viewing area.

For reference I do play games (3d shooters, etc) and watch movies. I've noticed other 17" LCDs by Samsung, NEC, ViewSonic, and BenQ that seem very good as well.

What would you guys recommend? The Dell seems very good and also has very competitive price... should I get that or look at some other LCD? I'm also willing to look at good 19" if they are in similar ~$300-$400 price range. Let me know, thanks

I've always said go to the store and look at monitors side by side before buying anything. I didn't know what I was looking for when shopping for my first LCD, but seeing a few together made the differences stand out.
Of course, I broke my own rule when I bought my Dell 2001FP. Certainly no regrets though. It's by far the most impressive monitor I've had. I'm tempted to say that you can't go wrong with a Dell UltraSharp, but others are welcome to question that conclusion.

I highly recommend the Samsung 710T is you can find it on sale. Dell has sales on LCDs a lot..and when there's more than one, sometimes you'll see a price drop of more than $60. It's definitely something to look for. If not, I'd stick with the Dell UltraSharp 1703FP. It sounds like a good value LCD to me...

For a 17" gaming LCD, i'd say 300-400 is tough. I'm sure with enough research and a good deal you can find it.

I recommend the Planar PX171M. Works great...no hiccups or ghosting thusfar. Haven't played Doom 3 yet (cause I can't afford it on my college budget), but with every other game no ghosting. Also, all 3dmark tests ran without ghosting.

I bought mine on ebay for 425 shipped...and not too long ago a fellow Anandtech member was selling a new one on the For Sale forum for 420 shipped.
