Choosing an LCD: contrast ratio vs response time..

Hi folks,

I've my eyes on 2 LCDs:

• LG 1952T

• Samsung 940BW

The LG model is a non-ws model which has a response time of 8ms which contrast ratio of 1400:1.

OTOH, the Samsung is a ws model with 4ms resp time and contrast ratio of 500:1.

Any idea which factor I should take into account? Response time or contrast ratio?

depends what you are using the LCD for
if you just doing basic stuff like email - surfing etc then any LCD will do and contrast and response time not important

if you're going to be gaming then anything <10ms and 500-800 contrast is fine

the 1400:1 ratio...how do they say it? does it say dynamic?
i suspect the 1400 is dynamic and the 500 is static
i think you would find that a 3000:1 dynamic is = to a 800 to 1000 static

I have been using LCD for computer since 2002 - now using a dell 19in on surfing computer and dell 22in widescreen on gamer

for games i have found contrast ratio to be very important - a low contrast will not bring out shadow detail in games - like Doom3
way back - i got a 300:1 LCD that i exchanged for a diff one - a 500:1
the game breaker was in Battle Field 1942 on Omaha beach in bunkers - on the 300 it was just dark inside and nothing i did with adjustments fixed it
with the 500:1 it was fine

if both are TN, contrast ratio is fat lie. So is viewing angle, so is number of colors.

The only choosing you can do is see them in person and see which one fits you better.

I'll be mainly coding and gaming (99% FPS).

Here's some specs of the LG pulled from some forums:

Contrast Ratio : 1600 : 1
Viewing Angle : 160 / 160
Response Time : 8ms

Here's the same thing for Samsung:

Brightness(Typ.): 300 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio(Typ. ): 500:1
Viewing Angle(H/V): 160/160 (CR>5)


Any further thoughts? 🙂
