Choose one of these cars:

1992 - 1994 Eagle Talon Turbo AWD
1991 - 1992 Acura Integra RS/LS
(Any year) Z24 V-6

Your priorities are:

1) Long-term (at least two years) reliability
2) Low maintenance and gas costs
3) Fast off the line and around the curves

You can't spend more than $3000 US. Which of these cars would you pick?

Or, how about none of the above?

For the $$ you have to work with, and the requirements you want, your best bet would be to look into a FWD turbocharged Dodge 4 banger. Something like a daytona, shadow, or Spirit R/T.

The dodge turbo 4's are pretty dang reliable, and if they do break, are pretty cheap to repair.

Of the ones you mentioned, well, the Talon will be landing right in the middle of high maintanance territory...and they are not cheap to repair.

I can't say much for the acura, but I'm just not a fan of 10+ year old luxury cars.

The Z24 would actually wind up being the best investment IMHO out of the ones you listed. While the V6 in it is by no means "fast", it does offer a decent amount of torque and would be fine for driving around town. Regardless of what Chevy tries to market their "Z" cars as, it is by no means a competent canyon carver compared to the Talon.

Well I bought a sweet 92 Integra GS a few months ago for about $4000 if you can find a 91-92 for under $3000 in good shape go for it.

Two years isn't long term for any car...I'd take an older Z24 cuz you could probably get one in semi-decent condition...

Out of the two, the Integra is your better option. The Talons/Eclipses, especially the AWD ones, are a nightmare to repair. I worked with a guy who had a Talon in that generation & he sunk some serious money into transmission/clutch problems.

The Integra, however, should be very reliable.

Viper GTS

Yeah, but I was wondering what he had in mind 🙂
All of you saying "Integra", Acura Integra's are nice cars, but the fast ones (GS or GS-R's) are expensive and harder to find.

Dunno about the Dodge cars, I think spirits are on the expensive side too but I'll have to check. I'd check now but the lame-ass website for used-cars around here is giving me errors.. oh well, this is more for a friend anyway who was thinking about these cars. I'm not buying a car myself for at least a year probably. 🙂

i guess the Integras would be the cheapest to maintain.
the Eagle Talon = Plymouth Laser = Mitsubishi Eclipse, and the turbo AWD Talon = the Eclipse GSX.
it is a good car, but the maintance for the turbo alone would cost quite a bit.

not sure about the american cars, is the Z24 a sup-up version of the Cavalier?

The spirit r/ts and daytona r/ts are expensive because they are pretty rare. They also are not exactly reliable either from what I have read. Those dohc Lotus heads eat timming belts and gears like they are candy 🙂 and parts arn't suppost to be real easy to find either.

Your better off just sticking to a type II turbo.

" There's no way a Daytona or Shadow is going to be near the car the Integra will be."

That depends on what your looking for.
Speed and handling yes they can and some

Unless edmunds is flawed, Camaro Z28's from early 90's can be had for under $3000 US. Maybe I should tell my friend to get one of those? 😉

Or what about Firebird Formula? 1992 is under $3000 and out of the three cars I listed probably only the Eagle Talon could match it. Thing is, this car and the Camaro drink gallons of gas for breakfast, probably don't have the best handling or reliability either, but they sure have the off-line power 😉

what! The talon and the camaro have the same highway gas mileage! That's crazy...

i didn't read anythin gnad just clicked reply but what do you know, mellondust took the words right out of my mouth:

<< Go for reliability, it will save you $$$ in the long run. Go for the Acura. >>
