Hi,

Can you please recommend a motherboard for Intel Xeon E3-1230 (8M Cache, 3.20 GHz)
http://ark.intel.com/products/52271

This computer is mainly for Home, Desktop, Development, Office, Virtualization. No overclocking + Low end & silent video would be enough. This CPU supports socket LGA 1155. Do I need to use a "server class" motherboard? What if I use a "consumer" 1155 motherboard?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

you can use a "consumer" 1155 mobo (i.e. chipsets H61, H67, P67, Z68), but it won't be officially supported (small chance that you'll run into problems), and you can't use ECC ram on the consumer 1155

since you can't overclock a xeon anyways, get a cheaper H67 mobo with SATA6 and USB 3.0

and you need a discrete card anyways for the E3 1230. otherwise, maybe the E3-1235 (which has built in IGP) might work with the H67 chipset (price difference on newegg is $25...)

The Xeon E3-1230is a Quad-Core Server Processor. I certainly would check the motherboard CPU Support List before purchasing and installing such a processor. I would not recommend experimenting with unsupported processors. Here are several models that I checked the CPU Support List for compatibility:

Supported by:
ASUS P8P67 WS REVOLUTION
ASUS P8B-M
ASUS P8P WS

Not Supported by:
ASUS P8P67 PRO (REV 3.1)
ASUS P8H67
