Chkdsk in win2k is unable to repair NTFS partition. keeps rebooting !

Hi !

Yesterday I did a chkdsk in win2k and it discovered this strange error:

CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the
master file table (MFT) bitmap.
CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

Then, I run chkdsk/f to fix the errors during bootup.
During bootup, it checks, founds errors and then reboots the machine. BUT, in win2k, if I run chkdsk again, it will find the same errors ! 😕

Strange thing is, if I boot winxp from my second partition and chkdsk the first one, it won't find any errors !

I am confused ! Can someone help ?

Thanks !
😉

Don't run chkdsk while the OS is running unless you know you have a problem. The filesystem may be out of sync with what the MFT says because some of the filesystem buffers may still be in memory instead of on disk. You would think chkdsk would force the OS to flush all it's dirty buffers first, but apparently it doesn't.

But, when chkdsk runs during bootup, it finds errors and suddenly the computer restarts.
Then, if I force him to do a check again, he will STILL find the same errors. 😉

Well, while running win2k, chkdsk shows the errors but can't fix them. So, during bootup, chkdsk trys to fix but reboots instead just before making changes 🙁

THor !
