I'm contimplating which chipset I would like to have featured in my next motherboard. I am going PC2100 DDR with a T-Bird 266 processor. Which motherboard chipset do YOU profer and why. I know they all have strong and week points. I'm particularly interested in the new ALI chipset as I've had good luck in the past. Thanks :)

I am going to stray from the boundaries of your poll and say that Intel chipsets are my fav. :)

but of the others, I'd say AMD!!
my buddy has a K7M with the Irongate 750 on it and it's fast and flawless. rock stable.
I'd buy an AMD chipset mobo most likely..

Via are ok, pretty good nowadays.. and ALI are just plain BAD!

How are Ali bad? The KA266 got a bad rap early, but let me tell you, when all is said and done, and all the 266 DDR boards are out (if I'm not dead by the time Via's comes out), the Iwill wth Ali chipset will be mong the top 3

I agree with Dulanic..the KT266 has something called V-link which speeds up communication between the north and south (bridges that is.) My problem is that i'm looking to build a pc but I keep postponing it because better technology keeps coming. guess I'm lucky that I can use my roommates computer while I wait...but I really need to bite the bullet and close the deal. I think I will hold out for the MSI or ASUS DDR boards running on the via chipset. I've heard they may be out sometime in March.

Even AMD said the KT266 will be the main player of the DDR field, they didnt expect the AMD760 to be a dominant force, but rather just a reference design of the first DDR chipset.

Yeah, I think the KT266 boards should be the best, but I wouldn't count out the ALi chipset. Can't talk much about it, but you will be seeing some impressive stuff come from the Ali chipset at about the same time the KT266 come out

True. But then again, that's been true since the paleolithic era. :D Just bite the bullet and go! If the change slows down, life will become ever so much more dull.

How are ALI bad? ok well all I gotta say is Aladdin V. what a piece of trash..All I ever wanted to do was play games but I couldn't cause no video cards would work!! I do not care what they make nowadays what they used to make is complete junk!!
I'm sure everyone agrees unless they have a NEW revision of the Aladdin with all the proper patches, etc. then it's ok, but if not.. it's a huge hassle and not worth it!

biased against ALI

I bought an Atlon motherboard early on and got one with the AMD 750 chipset. At the time, I thought maybe I should have waited for a VIA KT133 board. But then I started to see all the VIA-related problems people seemed to have, whereas my AMD Irongate board was very solid. So I'm currently biased in favor of the AMD chipset.
