Chipset Question?

I have a dell dimension 2400 and I am going to swap out motherboard/case/memory with new stuff. When I run CPU-Z it tells me that my chipset is I845-G. Is a mothboard with I865-G compatible with this? The chips is a 478 Intel Celeron. Thanks.

Wait. You're going to buy a new mobo, case and memory and KEEP a P.O.S. Celeron Processor? WHY?

If you're going that far you may as well upgrade the CPU. Buy a mobo, CPU and ram to match.

DO NOT try to install a standard mobo in a Dell case. Won't work. They use a non-standard layout. You can salvage the drives and cards but your will want to replace the mobo, CPU, RAM, case and PSU. Do not try to use that PSU in a custom build. It is a standard ATX but the wattage will not be sufficient for a modern mobo.

You can get any mobo that's 478 compatible. Also, you may need to get a new copy of windows as well. My experience has been that when Windows comes with a Dell, that copy of Windows will only work with a Dell mobo.

I don't know what your overall plan is, but as long as you're buying mobo, case, and memory, you may as well buy a new proc too. Just a thought. Edit: that someone else also had.

FlyingPenguin is correct. It would be a waste to build a new system around that chip and the rest of that system would contain mostly proprietary crap. The drives are easily reuseable, but the case, Mobo and PS are not. The memory might be reusable depending on the size and type. And while dell does use very good power supplies, one that came with a 2400 wouldn't be powerful enough for most uses.
