Chipset "limitations" would prevent use of DOS utilities?

I have seen warnings about 965-based motherboards that are not compatible with Win98/ME. I'm not planning on installing those OS versions, but I do have important utility and image backup programs that need to boot to a DOS environment.

Does anybody know exactly what the compatibility issue is related to? If it is the lack of a USB driver or something that would only matter for a full OS, then it is non-issue. But if the disk drives, network, or DVD/CD were not usable from DOS, and there were no drivers available, that would be a significant issue.

Can anybody provide the details on this?
