Chipset Fan Making Noise

Abit KV8 Mobo, the chipset fan is loud, an annoying loud, and occassionally the fan power wire starts rubbing against the fan and makes a very loud hideous noise.

My question is will a fanless option cool the chipset adequately, or are there any fanned options that are for the most part quiet. I want to keep my chipst cool but not at the expense of my ears.

I have this fairly large ThermalTake HSF, its not that wide just pretty tall. Thought this would be good to know before suggesting chipset cooling options.

I've replaced the chipset HSF with a larger HS only solution on every board I've owned that had a chipset fan, I hate those small fans, they make more noise then any other fan in the case.

I OC also, and it has not adversely affected OCing. I use a large chipset HS, and AS5 for my TIM. IIRC a chipset HS is like $10-20.

If you have the late Abit NB fansink (the green round orb-type fansink), it is actually pretty beefy and compares favorably with the Zalman fanless NB47J.

I have experimented with both the orb-type Abit fansink and the Zalman fanless, and I get better performance out of the Abit fansink with its fan slowed down to 2500RPM than the Zalman.

Your best bet is to take apart that Abit fansink (if it's a late model), clean off the dust bunnies and lube the fan spindle, then remount it and hook it up to a fan controller (or solder in a resistor).

The thing with the stock fan speed is that it's ungodly fast-- 6000RPM. It's noisy and wears out the spindle very fast. Slow it down to below 3000RPM and it will still cool well, run quiet, and extend the spindle life.

HTH.

Well the mobo is KV8, and the fan is not the green orb type, its a basic silver chipset fan that says Abit on it. And yes it does stay at a constant 6000rpm, I don't know how I can lower the RPMs on it thought. If you could tell me how I can do that I would appreciate it.

Yep, you got the smaller old fansink it looks like.

Well, you can still try cleaning it off, lubing it and slowing down the fan. All you have to do is put that fan on a fan controller like the Zalman Fanmate (which lets you dial up or dial down the speed as needed). Otherwise, you can solder in a 100-ohm resistor into the red wire to permanently slow it down.

HTH.
