I am using an Asus TUSL2-C board (815 chipset) and a P3-1G chip (o/c to 1200 for what that's worth) and windows 2000 Pro.

The machine was put together new in November or so, and runs great. Very, VERY stable and no OS issues at all. I'm quite satisfied with the machine et al, but for a single red X in the device manager. When I put it together, of course I installed the drivers for the board that were on the Asus CD Rom.

Later, I went to the Intel website to get the latest 815 chipset drivers. After installing "all the right stuff" there is still that darn red X in the device manager. Under "SYSTEM DEVICES" it is listed as Intel[R] 82801 BA/BAM SM Bus Controller 2443

Like I said, I put the machine together a couple of months ago, and all is VERY stable. But that Red X bothers me. When I enable it, it will get disabled again after a reboot. I haven't looked for any updated drivers again, because up til now my thoughts were "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

But then I found this forum and figgered I would ask you folks for advice. By the way, this machine was run at default settings (1000 Mhz) right up until last week when I decided to overclock it. The disabled device showed after installing the Asus drivers, and did not go away when I installed the Intel update. So that's were I'm at.

The SMBUS (System Management Bus) is non-essential to the operation of your system (and indeed is VERY RARELY used anywhere).

The latest version of the chipset drivers is version 3.20.1008.

Install the chipset drivers, then remove the SMBus device, and let the system redetect it.
