i have an ASUS CUSL2 mobo, and the north bridge came with one of those flat green heatsinks on it. my question is will i get a temperature difference if i remove it and put it back on using arctic silver? also, are the pegs in the corners the only thing holding it on there, or is there a thermal compound or adhesive already there?

it actually is not a bad idea to put some thermal grease on a chipset heatsink. While its probably not going to cause any problems, its easy and cheap to do, and if it could save you a crash or two why not go for it?

All that should be holding it are the four pegs. Pop it off, slap some grease on, put it back. Your set

i wasnt implying that it needs to be drastically cooler than it is now. its just that i moved back to college and the ambient room temp here is much warmer than it is at home. this raises my case, chipset, and CPU temps...but thanks for the advice...

:) My Cusl had some white grease on the greenie when I popped it off. Squeeze the plastic pin together and push it back to front - use a small blunt object while squeezing at the same time. re-grease and re-insert, -the pins are good for a few installs if you don't mutilate them. I think the greenie trick is more critical on BX chipsets overclocking - but if you are 145+ then everything helps.
good luck + a side note: I ruined my CUSL by slipping with a screwdriver while installing alpha on peltier and coldplate- I scratched about 5 traces next to the CPU. Wouldn't have been so bad but I didn't notice till after 3 weeks of troubleshooting - DUH

thanks for the advice guys...by the way, BurningUp, is there any way to get greenie off without taking the mobo out? or do i have to see the back of the mobo to squeeze the white pins together to get greenie off?

bacillus, boy would it be nice if that site told you how much air those fans move or how much noise they make;)...my system already sounds like an airplane. i dont want to put anymore fans in if they are loud.

You need access to the back of the mobo to get the pegs out in one piece.

Sunny129, the lasagna is very quiet & fan is rated around 6cfm. I have one & can vouch for it personally!

You don't have to pull the MB out if you have some 90 degree needle nose plyers. Just rest the plyers on the greenie, grab the white prongs and gently lift with leverage until they pop out. As for the Tennmax Lasagna cooler, I use one on my 815 chipset just to keep it nice and cool. Get the "B" model for the 815 chipset and elongate the holes. It will sit on the chipset at a 40 degree angle or so, but it covers the entire surface area. Just to make sure, I lapped mine up to 1200 and applied Artic Silver and modified the connector to a 3-pin mini and connected it to the MB for voltage. Nice and clean. Probably overkill, but I can't hear it and I know it works as I've used them on several Graphics cards with excellent results.

thanks for the advice on how to remove greenie w/out having to take my mobo out. and i think i'll take a closer look at that Lasagne cooler. it sounds like a very nice piece of hardware.
