Chipping The CPU?

Hope I'm in the right forum for these two questions: I have noticed users selling their " chipped " cpu, both here and at Ebay, Q1) is the cpu getting chipped in the process of installing the HSF?(if not, how?) and, Q2) is there a great risk of damaging your system/components by running a "chipped" cpu?

that is the only way(normaly) to chip a core.....hsf instalation....it usally just raises the core temps when its chipped or stops working when its chipped to bad... should'nt hurt any other parts..

Some ppl here reported...chipped could.
1. Increase core temp.
2. Didn't fire up at all.
3. Fire up but can't O/C.
4. Fire up but no stable (even at rated speed).
5. Some times fire up sometime don't.

wow just what i want a...

<< well, i just bought a duron 800 for my mom and it came chipped in the packing. it was the tiniest chip, but it was there plane as day on the top right hand corner of the cpu. i booted up and installed windows just fine and everything seems to be running stable >>

Of course forgot to mention tht some ppl do get the chipped core CPU running fine w/o any probs. LOL. Its a risk...but u decide.

I'd be a bit wary of buying something like that. There must be a reason the user is selling the CPU and its usually because something's gone wrong. j

I chipped my first CPU too. PIC!

chipped core. Its the pic on very top. Go ahead and enjoy the few pics below it too...

Thank you all for your responses. Looks like chipping a cpu can happen to anyone, and, can become a "dud". Thanks for the links, too.

Well, alot of the time, you'd get away with chipped cores. Unlucky people experience total failure and unluckiest experience mysterious instability.

It's kinda funny. I never chipped a chip until recently. I could never understand how this happends to all of these people. But when I change CPU's or HS/F I started to get lazey and not take the mobo out and do the job right. Well that is how I started to chip chips. So now I just do the job right the first time and take all of the components out and then no more chiped chips.
