Yeah thats the TDi site I was refering to. You got a great car there N8Magic, and the color rocks too. You did get it in a 5 speed, right?

*sigh* I am fixing up a clean 84 GTi and just got a 4 to 2 exhaust manifold for it.

I've driven my friends A4 extensively, both before and after he chipped it with APR. Honestly, I may not be worth it. It does give more top end power, however it does nothing to the low end, and it still feels like pushing it would help get it off the line.
Simply put: no power until 4K RPMS. Before or after the chip. If your looking for bawls, you should not have bought the 4cyl engine.

<< Something must be wrong, because you are part of a very, VERY small minority. Actually, your experience is totally backwards from everything I've read. The chips increase low end torque which certainly makes the car feel head-snappingly fast. And they are also known for less-than-stellar performance above 5k RPM's, simply because the small turbo can't provide enough airflow at those speeds. >>

Beat me to it Triumph! Low-end torque is what the 1.8T is very well known for, and 'chipping' increases it even more. Dyno chart...torque peaks at around 3300rpm, still pretty low on the power band.

Yup, it's a 5-speed. Thanks for the compliments. :)

This is my first brand new car (always used in the past) and I am soooooo excited!

<< Can anyone tell me what year they started putting the 1.8T in the jetta? >>

The 1.8T was an option beginning with the 2000 Jetta according to Edmunds.

Not saying you didn't experience what you said, just that it isn't the same thing thousands of other people have experienced with the chip.

Yes, there is a performance increase. I didn't say there was not. Its just not in the low end. "headsnapping" is not what it feels like... More like go-cart.

I drive a 93' Maxima (with most of the handling mods that I can get for my car) It has a 3.0L V6 160HP. Not fast. In fact its the slowest max... Anyway, off the line I have WAAAY more power that his A4 (this is the "headsnap" effect. He gets me at about 40mph though (turbo). At 37mph, I'm about a car and a half ahead and he is closing fast.

<< Ok I have some questions on the 1.8T, just broadening my horizons.

What is Chipping?

How do you chip?

What are the different stages of chipping and HP gain?

How miuch does it cost?

Can you chip all the 1.8T engines? (A4, GTI, Jetta)

Anything else that should be known.

what? who cares? If the A4 can beat your max at 0-60, what does it matter if the maxima is ahead for the first 3 seconds? I can beat nearly any car on the street in my dad's expedition for the first 2 or 3 seconds.

? WTF?

Wow, with me trying to expand my horizons and learn new things, you come in here and teach me the greatest lesson of all, none the less with no kind of proof or reasoning behind your logic.

Sounds like you and your friend do not know how to properly drive a turbocharged car.

The turbo in the 1.8T spools up at 2000 RPMs. If you engage the clutch at a lower RPM than 2000, the car will feel a bit slow until over 2000RPMs. Once you hit 2000 RPMs, or engage the clutch over 2000RPMs your neck will snap back.

Mine does in my unchipped 2002 VW GTI 1.8T, your friends chipped Audi should have no problems doing it. A chipped A4 should also blow your Maxima away.

My stock 1.8T puts out 150HP, and that thing WILL snap your head off the line, in first AND second gear. A chipped A4, which has ~200 HP, Quattro, and shorter gearing than my passat, should by all means pull even harder off the line than your maxima. Something isn't happening correctly.

I just realized that I'm not sure if your friend's A4 is quattro or not.
What's the topic of this thread again? Oh yeah, CHIP THE A4!! It is an incredible bargain. You won't regret it, unless your dealer decides to void your window warranty because of the chip.
