So yeah, I reinstalled my SLK-800 tonight to try to lower temps, but that didn't help much (64 die, 50 socket). Almost had a heart attack though - a small ship on the side of the core when I pulled off the heatsink. I really don't like the darn clip on this heatsink - it seems too tight (e.g. it easily scraps off plastic from the CPU socket on my A7N8X dlx). But, this story has a happy ending - the chip thankfully still works. And, I'm still running at 2180 @ 1.85V. A decent OC for a 2100+. Now to buy some better case/CPU fans. These L1As don't push enough air, and the Sunon on my heatsink has seen better days. Time to give my rheobus a workout - 20 watts/channel allows for 8 tornadoes - not that I'd ever do anything that crazy anyways🙂
 
frigin tornados 80mms sound like jet engines i baught 3 and put them in my case damn the cooling was bad ass but the noise was incredible. However ive got a 92mm tornado on an slk-900u heatsink and its not bad, running a 2000+xp thouroughbred(1.67ghz 133 fsb) at 2600+(1.86 162fsb) runs like a dream and hasnt capped 35 degrees even under prime95 torture test. Those 3 tornados lower my temp down to 32 under stress @the 2600 setting but its so loud i cant stand it. So i put up with the 35 degrees and use 3 PCtoys Crystal MAXX thermal controls that run at4000 rpm and put out 52.6 cfm theve got some nice neon blue leds on them as well.
 
and btw be carefull with that chipped core, had a chipped 1.4 and when i remounted a new fan it chipped it a little more, and the heat got higher so i put on and even better fan and it chipped it even more. Its a viscious cycle! The slk-900u has the spring loaded screws so no worries there, just tighten those down evenly and no worries about chipping🙂

Did you use the bumpers Thermalright provides because the narrow base misses the standard bumpers?

If you hold the HS flat while putting on the clip, it shouldn't scrape anything. The thermal compound should stop any direct contact. A high pressure clip improves thermal transfer. Experts say all standard clips are way too weak.
 
I thought the SLK 800 clip was one of the easiest ones I've installed. If you think thats bad, try putting on a volcano 7+.
 
i have yet to install mine, and as far as i can tell it is a bit tougher than the "normal" clips

but ihavnt heard any horror stories, thats why i bought it lol, so i dont think it can be that bad....

did you read a "how to" before installing?
i think some ppl expressed the need to slide the heatsink all the way back before clipping it completely down becuase sometimes it stays upfront, which in turn doesnt make 100% optimal contact...

probably installing the included pads is a good idea as well....

if the SLK-800 is anything like the SK-6, that is exactly what you have to do.

Yep, I used the bumpers. The chip is part user error (swiss army knife screwdrivers don't work as well for this sort of thing as a regular screwdriver), but I seriously think that clip is a bit too tough. The best clip I've ever used was on my Swiftech MCX-370. That spring loaded contraption they have makes it impossible to damage the core.

is 1.86 your vCore? just fyi - 2600+ => 2.13GHz (266FSB) or 2.08GHz (333FSB). 1.86GHz is the infamous 2300+

Somebody doesn't seem to know much about overclocking. It is considered safe to increase voltage on a chip up to .2 volts over stock. Going above that is a bit risky, but even then it can be done with sufficient cooling.
 
hey stock voltage is 1.65 i set mine at 1.75 but my pcprobe is reading it in at a wicked 1.8 what voltage is correct?????????? ive got good cooling and im still running at 38c under prime95 with this setting can i anticipate a long life out of my 2000+xp thouroughbred running at this temp with this voltage? or am i gonna set it into an early retirement?

You should be fine. Voltage fluctuations happen. For instance, on my Asus, the voltage spikes at 1.9, but settles in at an average 1.87. Your cooling is doing fine, and if prime is stable, that chip will last well beyond the day that you will replace it anyways.
 
hehe prime crashed after about an hr on 1.725 but seems to be doing well now hasnt crashed yet hoping this will be stable, its been going for allmost 3 hrs now
